Seriously, how do you damage a shaft like that?

I have no clue, the shaft came in a package deal. I'm not out any money or anything, just curious.

Hard to tell what happened, but my guess is that someone tried to spin the shaft in a lathe, probably for cleaning, and tried to hold it using a spur center at the headstock, rather than a threaded drive or a chuck. Not the smartest thing to do, but I've seen much worse.

Did the owner of the shaft use joint protectors made by Lonnie Wilber?. Might explain the damage.

Looks like he used it to dislodge an obstruction in his garbage disposal.

I'd go w/the lathe explanation or something similiar. It looks like someone took a spade bit to the end of the shaft, the chattering is what you get w/o a proper pilot hole.
