I've read of so many older players (Earl comes to mind immediately) down on their luck and I just re-listened to the interview before TAR 25 and Dennis Hatch was talking about getting a job because he needed the insurance to go to a Dr. because he has 2 torn rotator cuffs and a bad knee. And their are a million other examples.
I realize they got themselves in this mess one way or another, but regardless they are human beings and they have given us all so much that I just really feel bad. Much like chess in the U.S. it makes zero sense to me that someone that is so huge to me is meaningless to others. There is no reason Earl should die broke and alone. To me it's like Mozart dying of malnutrition.
My question is this: Does anyone have any ideas on how I could help out effectively? I have some money and wouldn't mind giving up to a couple few thousand a year toward something. I just don't know what that something is without getting ripped off or making a bad purchase. For ex., just giving someone money rarely accomplishes anything. I'm thinking along the lines of setting up and crowdfunding a group insurance plan, or donating equipment to Lindenwood U. or some such thing. Or even special cases like if Dennis Hatch or whomever needs surgery, find some way to help him out. I don't know. Any ideas?
