how do you count growth rings on a shaft? does someone have a picture so show me so i can see what type of shaft quality i have, thanks

Look at the photos of the 100 shaft blanks thread. Notice the lines on the ends of the shaft dowels. Those are grain lines.
Look at the lines running lengthwise down the two shafts in the below photo. These are grain lines. These shafts averaged roughly 25 grains per inch. These are pretty dang good. More important than the number of grain lines, they all run straight from end to end & are consistently spaced.
