below is my method.. started doing this about 30 years ago before some of the great products out today were available... and being old and stuck in my ways I still use this method..
1. Steam a damp cloth. I boil water, place a damp cloth in a strainer above the steam until cloth is steaming....
2. wipe down shaft with steaming cloth..
3. quick wipe with 600+ sand paper
4. another quick wipe with another steaming cloth...
THEN..
5. seal it by wiping until warm with a cloth soaked in "zippo lighter fluid"... seals the wood ... feels as smooth as glass...
6. a nice finishing touch is a burnishing with an old styled $100 bill.. I find the newer ones not as good.. maybe it is the change in paper or ink?
