Thats all there is too it. How do you pronounce Schon, not how you think its supposed to be pronounced. Or how people around you pronounce it, just you.

The more votes we get the better. Maybe we'll get a consensus. Or maybe the entire board will split 50/50 and this argument goes on for all eternity

Damn, I say 'Shown', but it's neck 'n' neck on the poll with 'Shawn'.
Where the hell are you guys from Tennessee?

To rhyme with John; but that's not a choice, and may well be the most common pronunciation. Shawn is putting a localized, perhaps Southern, dialect on things.

The proper way is shoon -like noon. It means or translates to good or pretty -I think. However, I have always heard it pronounced as "shown" in the Tri-State area.

Sigh... I've been to more parts of Germany than the vast majority of AZers. And since I actually pay attention (you can't expect a local to pay attention to their own accent), I can say very confidently that 'shoon' is the least prevalent way of the four or six ways it's said in Germany.

Freddie <~~~ does anyone pay attention?

After everything I wrote, you still wrote Shawn??? Seriously?

What would you have preferred? I think most people get the gist of what I'm trying to do here. This is an informal poll not a judicial inquiry.

shahn

SHAW un

Shone

There must be the most basic element you're missing. If there are half dozen different ways to say the name Shawn, ....

Oh forget it. I see Bob is trying make the same point.

Freddie <~~~ saying "chocolate "

Since this is a public poll, everybody is going to know that I pronounce it wrong.
I just can't get in to pronouncing it the other way

The only thing that matters is how they pronounce the O is it like AWN or OWN. Adding an option for every regional inflection is only gonna delude the argument further.

FTR I counted SEAN, JOHN, SHAWN and SHAHN. as all pronouncing the vowel the same way. As in Awning, as opposed to Owning.

If the poll has showed us anything its that theres no wrong way to pronounce it, Its almost 50/50. Although I think pronouncing it the way the cumaker does is the "most" right

That's what I thought, but for some reason I just can't call them Shawns.
I would call them by the British pronunciation "scone", before I would say Shawn, and unfortunately that was not an option for this poll.

fef.jpg All I can say is it's a good thing Eddie didn't bring a Shuuunaruny to the seedy bar. They'd have broken his neck as well. ->:ok:

Everyone in the Freeport area of NW IL pronounces it Shown.

When I've spoken to Bob Runde who lives in Racine WI (not overly far from me) he DEFINITELY pronounced it differently - but I don't remember exactly how he said it...

So I know I'm wrong. I just don't care.

I called the company and was told it sounded like "Shawn". I had been pronouncing it wrong for many years.

I suspect the company might know how to pronounce its own name.

schoen there are to dots above the O it means beautiful in german

As posted in another thread, I met Bob's son in college and spent a fair amount of time with him and his dad. Also played at Romine's and was around Terry Sr. (former co-owner and now owner) and Jr. for 15 years. Bob pronounced it as "Shawn", said it meant beautiful in German, never really heard "Shown" being said much at all until I traveled, in various spots around the country I've heard both "Shown" and "Shawn" very commonly used with confirmed advocates in both camps for various reasons.

I've seen posts by several language "experts" (some of whom are probably right) about the several different meanings in the native language, the affect of the umlaut on both pronunciation and meaning, parallels with other Nordic-type languages, etc. That's all good information, but it should be pronounced the way the owner of the company pronounced it, linguistically correct or not, don't you think? After all, for these purposes it's a brand name not just a word from a language.
