How Does This Happen?

Notice in the link the shots on the 1B and 3B. On both shots there is a very slight angle, they are NOT straight in. I had both of these shots in the last half hour while I was breaking some racks of 9-Ball and the shot was to follow both shots to get the next best shot.

However, somehow I managed to follow-scratch on both of these balls. How is that possible? Don't the Laws of Physics prevent me from following and scratching considering both shots have a slight angle? Or is it a possible skid type situation that caused this?

Willing to bet you did not aim the shots to center pocket. You probably cheated the pocket slightly making them staight in and scratched. Check your alignment.

If I would have cheated the pocket that would have made the CB miss the pocket even further. Not sure what you mean here. And if I hit them straight in the CB would have still missed the pocket.

No, I don't think there would be an issue of skidding into the pocket. Often times our memory of a particular shot isn't quite as the shot actually was. My guess is that it was a little straighter than you thought.

My friend Gene Nagy used to say to me, "If you think the shot just about doesn't go, then it probably goes." The same thing goes for the cue ball. If it looks like the cue ball is just barely going to miss the pocket, then it can go in the pocket.

Do you think maybe you're putting inside on the 3 which could make it hit the ob fuller and then throw the cue ball left when they contact?

So with inside left, the ball squirts out right and swerves in to hit the ball more square and the left pulls the cueball to the left more resulting in a scratch?

I'm just guessing but seems like a few variables could be at work.

I didn't use any English on the 3B but I did on the 1B and it was inside as I had to go all the way downtable for the 2B (which isn't in the diagram).

Maybe you've hit on something here TtT.

Depends what side you hit the ob ball on. You have nearly an entire ball width to play with. Looks to me that you could hit both shots straight to the pocket but on the side that would make the CB track straight to the hole.

Have you thought of setting them up again, and playing them over and over, to observe your results?

Don't forget that the pocket is more than twice the size of a cue ball. You can hit slightly off center and still find the mouth of a large pocket.

Hit the ball with outside on both shots. Straightens the cue balls direction up when playing these shots. You may think you didn't hit with outside but you must have, and quite a bit of it at that.

Man, shot 1...It took me like 5 years to stop scratching it. What happens a lot is when use a bit of inside you adjust aim for deflection but the CB swerves back more than you think. This results in the CB heading toward the pocket. The remedy for me was making triple sure my stroke was uber level and not using too much english.
