How Does Your Potting Rate - Potting Test.

I shot a 46 using the shots you set up on that cue table. I did it all at once, took me about an hour, maybe a little more. I had a 2/10 run on one of the particular shot setups. It's the one where you put the object ball on the spot and put the cueball in the same position opposite of the object ball. You then cut the ball into the corner pockets (5 each way). I went 2/10 overall on this shot and it really hurt my score.

I play on an oversized 8' Diamond Professional with 4.5" pockets. I have an image of the table below. I really don't know how stingy the pockets are. They seem to play the same as any other Diamond I have played on. The balls are a bit dirty, I had a couple of skids which resulted in misses.

I definitely identified some strengths and what is apparently a giant weakness of mine. I will work on that immediately lol.

I do have an opinion on the scoring. I fell into the B range and I hardly consider myself a B player. I am a C player no doubt about it, and probably a weaker one at that. John Schmidt helped me get a stroke straight, and I put a lot of work into that, so I am probably showing a bit higher than I really am as far as letter grade goes.

I think its a good system to help you improve. I am glad I did it and I will try it again in a few months after I have put in some more practice.

P.S. You might want to add a disclaimer, I don't think beginners should even be looking at this. These are not easy shots and there is no way a beginner will even come close to 20. Most people I know wouldn't even make a single shot if they tried. If you can make 15-20 of these I think you are well out of the beginner status.

Well made out, but ended up gambling with a couple of friends and our A.P.A. L.O.. Never made an attempt, will be out later to try it. lol

Thanks for having a go s0lids!
Not a bad score I reckon. I was on target for the same score at the halfway mark before I retired ;)

I'm still not sure how much to account for score differences from 9' tables to 8' and 7' for this test. Your pockets look pretty tight, especially considering how far back the shelf seems to be.

btw: I'm tending to agree with you re: beginner level. I certainly don't want players to avoid this test because it unfairly under rates them.

Nice shooting Eric. Was that 13 out of 16? Seems you've got a damn good eye.

Here's a few things you might want to think about re: constrictive criticism (not that your potting seems to need a bunch)
1. When you address the ball, looking for the line, your head and body seems to wiggle a bit each side of the line. It might help if you can smooth out this process, perhaps by sliding into the line more than dropping down onto it.

2. The stroke could relax a little. On some shots it looked a little jabby and swoopy. I mean, comparing it to the silky smoothness of some pros.

Again, good shooting and thanks for putting in a video, even if it was just 16 shots and you got a couple of balls in slightly the wrong places. ;)

Colin

Thanks Colin, your comments are just the ones I look for.

I agree that my stroke can be more fluid. I've been trying to be more fluid for years, but not at teh expense of accuracy. It's been a work in progress...

On the swaying- this is part of my aiming process. I noticed that SpiderWebb does it too, probably cuz we use similar aiming systems. My thought process is that first, I want to find the true center to edge line. The swaying helps me make sure that my back foot is planted as close to perfect on the center to edge line. Once I determine that I'm aligned properly, then I move into the shot. Also, I do need to "slide" into my shots more (thank you).

Lastly, if I count the 2 balls my dog put into my right pocket, then my score should be higher

haha,
I need to get a dog to increase my scores I think:idea:

Better not change that head side to side if that's part of how you're finding the aim line. Damn weird stuff how that works, but it seems to do the trick

Good luck working on the fluidity, stroke delivery. It should help you to refine your CB control. Don't tell me you've got a system that has taken care of that?

Colin ~ Wants his time back for the 1,000 hours cueing through a bottle.

There are systems that help with positioning. They use the diamonds. Of course all tables do not play the same so you need to account for that.

Just finished the test. This is my 4th try. The first 3 were 32 33 32.

1 2 2
2 1 3

4 5 2

6 2 3
7 1 3
8 3 1
Tot. 19 21 40

I did that in Excell and it was in nice neat columns. Then I copied it and pasted it here and this is what I got. I hate Bill Gates.

That depends Dave, what aiming system does Bill use?

Good to see you're making some ground on these shots. I suspect these long shots are not the bread and butter of straight pool the way they are in 9-ball and hence you don't have to focus on them so much.

Colin

I get a lot of long shots in straight pool due to poor control of the cue ball.

If you ever decide to revise the test I would suggest some side pocket shots.

Well, finally did it. Heres the results, score 60.

L R
1. 1 1
2. 1 1
3. 3 5
4. 5 5
5. 5 5
6. 5 4
7. 5 5
8. 5 4

Table was a 7' Diamond Pro Am with deep pockets.
On shot one I rattle every ball that didn't drop with the exception of one missed where I actually overcut it. Shot 2, I rattle a couple but mostly just flat missed. The others were a cinch for me. I always double checked table layout to retain accuracy over the shots that are drawn up on the sheet. I consider myself a C to at best low B player and currently a 5 on APA both 9-ball and 8-Ball.

Here pics of the exact table.
The pocket opening is a bit over 4 1/2" but with the extra deep shelf you have to shoot the ball in the hole.

If they don't show up, check page 3 of this thread, post by SDE.

Woot!! Finally got this printed!!

(btw,Did Bill Gates found Cannon??? Because if he is the asshole who sells a printer WITHOUT the cord to hook it to the computer then yeah,he's way up there on the hate list right now.)

Cool that sounds good to me.

Man it looks so easy on paper:rolleyes: .

Tball

I don't think Gates founded Cannon, but he would have if he had thought of it. My #2 printer is a Cannon MP470 and it definitely came with a power cord. I think you got shorted. Raise Hell where you bought it.

I know he didn't fwiw...I was just running with your "hate the compu guy" theme. Power I had,usb from the printer to the PC...nope.But,the book said I'd need to get one lol....really?WTF??

Kinda like having a car delivered with a note saying you are gonna need a steering wheel. If it aint gonna work without it,it should be in included if thats the buyers assumption....or at the very least,it should be spelled out in stupidly large letters ""don't leave the store yet maroon,it aint gonna work unless you buy something else" or some such verbage. [end rant]

Arghhh

Ohhhh, the usb cord. Right, you have to buy that seperately. I thought you were talking about the power cord.

Just read this whole thread, wow. Can't wait to try this. Probably be another 2 months though, as I just had surgery on my right (shooting) shoulder. Was shooting as good as I can recall prior to, so who knows?? It's only been about a week, but man do I miss it.

BTW, tried to give many in this thread GREENIES, but it told me I had to spread it around!?!
