How far off the cue?

I'm a fairly large guy - 6 feet, 220 lbs., and I'm really curious about something, especially since there are so many highly accomplished players here on AzB: in your normal stance, how far above the cue is your chin?

For most shots, I'm VERY comfortable and relaxed at about 15-18 inches, and actually shoot much better than I do when getting down lower. Lower than that and I start feeling tense and constricted. 15-18 seems to be low enough to line up, but high enough to see the "whole picture."

That being said, sometimes, for a really long shot, like one of those 8-foot straight-ins, I'll get down to 5 or 6 inches, but not often.

Female players scare me to death - they're more flexible (that's why girls can do those flat cheerleader splits), and some of them get so low, their cues actually brush against their chins! Man, wish I could do that...

I think it'd be interesting to know how low you guys get, and hear any comments you may have on the subject.

Thanks,
Ruark

Limbo time....

I'm about your size and on normal stance I'm usually like that:

On some shots I even go down as far as putting my chin on the cue but they are rare.

On other shots you will find me more straight up.
Whatever feels right at the moment and gets the job done.... :grin-square:

5' 7", chin barely off the cue, when I'm playing well. May not do it all the time now, I've gained a lot of weight, unfortunately.

Several years ago I was playing with a cheap cue that had a loose fitting joint, and if I wasn't clean shaven, whiskers would get caught in the joint and get pulled out as I stroked (ouch!)

6'3" 255lbs and my cue rarely leaves my cue, but i play English 8 ball and snooker so i think it may come down to a difference in the games and styles.

I got a buddy of mine that I shoot with and he's 6'4 and when I watch him shoot it look to me like it would be uncomforable to be that height and shoot pool .

I'm 5'7 and am comforable . It's funny is I just measured myself and boy was I wrong about my height on my licence it says I'm 5'11 and when I just took a measurment I'm 5'7 wow I guess I was a few inchs off lol :grin:

LOL it's funny how you can put what ever you want for height on your licence.

I was shooting with my chin right on the cue for a while, but after reading the aiming thread I don't know:confused: j/k

But I have found with a tough cut in the side pocket, I will stand almost up right to get a better look at the angle and fire away.

Ya thats true maybe the next time I renew it I'll put 8'0 lol

With side pocket shots I have no problem because I keep such a long bridge and ppl always tell me to shorten it but that's the way I shoot .

a couple comments here.
1. i'm anywhere between 4-6 inches above the cue on normal shots
2. i can do the flat cheerleader splits.
3. most snooker players have their chins about that close to their chins (i.e. steve davis)

Snooker tables are taller than pool tables, it's easier to get the chin to the cue...

quickly using the pythagarean formula(LOL),

i came up with this info: disclaimer: your results may vary and your distances may vary as well but the numbers don't lie

shooting with your chin only 2" off the cue with your chin at tip/cueball impact with a distance of 35" from chin to tip the hypotenuse (distance from you eye to cueball/tip) is 35"
shooting with your chin only 10" off the cue with your chin at tip/cueball impact with a distance of 35" from chin to tip the hypotenuse( distance from you eye to cueball/tip) is 36"
shooting with your chin only 18" off the cue with your chin at tip/cueball impact with a distance of 35" from chin to tip the hypotenuse( distance from you eye to cueball/tip) is 39"
keeping your head up causes you to be shooting longer shots every time compared to the person who gets their head closer to the shot.

I am 5'10" 220 and my 1/4" beard brushes against my cue on long straight shots. On half ball hits I am around 4-10". I don't have any problem getting that low and maintaining a normal pendulum stroke.

For myself, being low hinders depth perception and being high decreases accuracy. So i need to adjust my head height accordingly based on the shot.

This is an interesting topic. My comfort point is abouy 12" up, but it isn't about aiming as much as fluidity of stroke. My stroke starts to feels as if I'm binding, if I get lower. My elbow has to be pretty low to feel natural.
