How important is the cue for beginner-novice level?

Hi all... Recently started on a league team and I have my own decent Viking $300 cue already. I've witnessed newbies to intermediate level players purchase and trade several new cues and break cues in less than a year. Yes, their play has gotten better, but I'm thinking very little has to do with the cue.

I've always been under the assumption that unless you are solidly intermediate, heading towards advanced, particularly with cue ball control in every situation, the cue is much less important than the main physical aspects of play.

I just sort of smile and nod my head and it's nice to try different peoples' purchases, but do you think it's actually making them any better?
Play and stick with your viking. Don't be scared to have a cue repair guy "tune" the shaft for you (making it skinnier/adjusting the taper), and don't be scared to try different tips as you progress in your skill level. The more you get used to ONE cue (they ALL play different), and learn ball pocketing and english with THAT cue, the better you will be.

Still don't know exactly what you're saying, but I do know that, for a given cue, squirt is entirely determined by where you hit the CB regardless of tip shape or grooming.

PJ, I'm not here to hurt the billiard industry at all , sales must go on . That i believe , the poster said that he had an old Viking cue so I was always a house cue player and fifty or sixty years ago i didn't know what throw or squirt was , if I were to ask a player what it was then they probably told me I was a squirter or so... I think your best bet would be to go to your known pool player and ask without having to ask me an old eighty so year pool player. I hope you can understand me... I hope a pocket rock is still a shaper... Maybe that man can get by with his old Viking cue and still buy pool stuff along the way... Guy

I like the new. but I don't even know what a carbon fiber shaft is, I'm an 8 ball person since I was five years old ... I know some about new pool from watching about twelve too fifteen years of world players, I never played league, I played in bars for a living and hope to this day no one knows who I am . I came on the forum to try and fix some rules that everyone go this forum knows what I am saying . I do read and see that Dr Dave and Bob J. and all try to address and help... I believe that the pool world needs more understandable standard rulings... God bless you and hope all is well with you... Guy

A lot reminds me of the TV when they would line up six too ten people in a line and tell a joke to the back or last one and have them pass the joke from one too another then go up front and listen to the same joke , wow how much different that same joke was time it got to the front of the line... like a theauras all the different words that mean the same... Power to us and we must go on ... Guy

Only from the damage bad I've seen to people. Old and young, physical damage over pool games and alcohol... but anything that can make life easier in future, maybe try to eliminate some of the causes, can't eliminate alcohol but maybe help people that play pool... I see this forum as a good way to help, I guess I'm real old and looking for a value... Guy

the best way to eliminate issues with bar pool is to never fkn play pool in bars ever

I would say it depends on what the goal is of the beginner/novice. If he or she just wants to hit some balls for fun then get a cheap cue that rolls straight and put a good tip on it. If the intent is to spend the time to become a serious player then get a quality cue.

When I retired I was looking for something to fill the void so I decided to restart my long dormant pool game. Bought a 9' table and a Schon cue. Played 4 hours a day 7 days a week for a few years and got to the point when I can walk into a pool hall and look like I know what I'm doing. I don't regret spending the money on a quality cue.

Sorry but the rules in bars and leagues are fine. Talking about it for over ten years now on AZ Billiards is senseless. Shooting pool in bars and leagues is so much bigger than any professional league. Why should people want to shoot the exact same rules as the pros? Heck, even the rules are not all the same in pro tournaments. Dr. Dave does a great job of confusing league players and bar players. Pro players can keep their rules and play by them and league players will do the same. They will never be the same rules.
