Was just wondering how the rest of you experience the summer w.r.t
pool playing / action during the summer ?
Locally it seems like everybody enjoys the summer days and get back on the
cloth in August(ish), no official tournaments and we're recharging..
But I guess it could be opposite for some of you ?

Most people in my area are out golfing, myself included, for most of the summer. I promised myself that I would spend more time on the table this summer than I have in previous summers though. So far, so good!

Never tried any of those golf rackets :D
But I guess many of the pool players do just that - play golf. I understand that
we suppose to have some kind of benefit in some way but that is unknown terrain
for me :embarrassed2:

Oh, it's just fu#$ing boomin'! I actually played a race to five for five giving up the six and the break last week. Of course, I don't get out like I used to. Summer is the "non pool time."

Yeah it's normal for all pool rooms to die down in the summer and get busy in the winter. The ones that have become the main hangout for kids are lucky in the sense that they'll still fill up some summer evenings.

I think in the Midwest there are two big draws, fishing and golf. The room has been slow but I have been able to get into action more often. I have had to work for it and I have not been on the good end of it too often. Not big action but action none the less. I think people get burnt out after league all winter and 3 major (state, regional) tournys.

As for pool players having an edge in golf, some may, I don't. I can't break 80 to save my life in the last two years. My clubs are 25+ years old, maybe thats it but I doubt it.

Owning a pool hall in the summer is better than owning a
golf course in the winter......
but it's close

I do the cue repair at Grady Mathews room here in Columbia, S.C. The action isn't real consistent but can be found. The weekends fill up but clears out around midnight. We have a handicapped barbox 9 ball tournament every sunday evening which draws 15 to 20. We are having a $500 added 8 and under 9 ball barbox tournament next saturday so we'll see how that goes.

summer is pretty slow for pool here in MA as well. my buddy and i play at the ivory in holyoke on wednesdays. in the cooler weather they do pretty good. there is a 9 ball tourey which usually draws around 16 players, including on occasion a couple of local pros. for the last month or so they have a like 3 pple show up for the tourney and playing there feels like playing in my basement.

last night we headed to our usual saturday destination (not saying the name b/c i am still a little po'ed at them) in CT only to find they were closed. i understand if the owner wanted the long weekend off or if he thought it wouldnt be worth it to open up, but we are regulars there, every saturday for at least the last 6 months and all the staff knows us. when we cashed out last week you'd think someone could have said "hey guys next week were gonna be closed".

so we headed over to World Class Billiards in Manchester. got there at 7pm. i think we actually woke up the counter man who was snoozing on the sofa. we were the only players for quite a while but eventually some others trickled in, maybe 4 out of 20 tables saw use but the time we left at 1130.

There seems to be at least cheap action at Chesters in OKC. I have not been there for about 3 or 4 weeks (since chip & joey played gabe and walden scotch doubles). but, went there yesterday from 3 pm to 7 pm. Met and played a guy from Atlanta. Walden was playing another local some 9 ball on the 7' diamond.

Golf takes a few, but not many. Summer fun with the family may take some away.
What I think has taken more players out of the poolroom than anything is the bad economy because I certainly don't see as many of the familiar faces I used to, especially the ones that were associated with the building trades, and sales.
Make no mistake about it, this economy still continues to suck and if it weren't for the university kids coming in on the weekends, our poolhall would probably be in far more trouble than it may be in now.
