does anyone know how many players we're in the amateur portion of the mens tournament at valley forge last year? just was doing the math and 1000 players @ 75ea. is 75,000, but they only guarantee $5000 for 1st.

I know allen has to make money as the promoter, but this seems crazy. just wondering? trying to make a decision on going

As i recall, tournament entry includes ADMISSION charges of $10 a day or so, so you have to back that out before doing the math.

You Need To Go....

If you love pool you must go to Valley Forge. Allen works his a$$ off at this event and I don't begrudge him any profit he makes from it. Of course I don't go because of the money....although when I do cash it is nice indeed. Once you attend your first time you will be hooked and you won't miss another one!!! Truedat!!! Men's Pro Matches, Gambling Pit, Mini-Tournaments, March Madness on TV when you're not playing, thousands of 'pool-lovers', midnight pool tournaments at near-by pool halls every night, TAP league team and individual tournaments, hundreds of pool vendors.....these are the reasons I think it is the BEST single event every year. If you take the blinders off and don't focus so much on just the "prize money" you will open yourself up to a world of PURE POOL ENJOYMENT. I don't know how else to put it. Ya gotta go dude:smile:

How do you compare the BCA Event, and the DCC to VF? Why is VF better in your opinion?

My opinion...

How do you compare the BCA Event, and the DCC to VF? Why is VF better in your opinion?
I've never been to BCA but I have been to Vegas twice for APA. DCC might be better but to me you get better "bang for the buck" at VF. Some reasons why I like VF better:
1. DCC is too long for me. Too much money needed for 9-10 days of hotel, food, etc. VF is 4 nights/4 days.
2. Many more vendors at VF with clothing, cues, pool paraphernalia et.al.
3. TAP League (which I play in) has single and team events at VF.
4. The VF Gambling Pit is just so friggin' entertaining!! I'm sure all the action at DCC is cool too......but I can only handle this type of thing for a few days.
After that it gets old.....don't get me wrong I've never been to DCC but if I had unlimited funds I would go for sure. I have 7 & 11 year old daughters so I really can't get away for entire length of DCC. The 4 day VF Expo is perfect.
5. Midnight Tournaments at the local pool halls (Norristown, Markley Billiards) are fun to me.....get off the bar table for awhile and play real pool on the 9 footers!
6. Time of year....I'm an ex-basketballer.....March Madness is always on when I'm at VF....let's face it....if I'm home with the wife and kids....I just wouldn't get to watch as much of the MADNESS.
7. Nice 8 table arena to watch the Men Pros play. I mean last year there were so many marquee matchups on the 8 different tables that I didn't know which one to watch....
8. VF only 4.5 hours drive for me on PA turnpike (I live in Pittsburgh).
9. The setup at the convention center is second to none. Two floors of vendors and pool tables...always something interesting to do..
10. Good food nearby within 5 minute drive if you don't want to eat at the convention center.
11. I'm biased because I've been going for over 20 years.....and have made many friends here that I get to see only at the EXPO.

This is not a comprehensive list but in a nutshell it's just the perfect place to go for a pool lover such as myself for a short period of time...but I really get all pooled-out until I drive home on Sunday. I just love VF and everything about it........SUPER BILLIARDS EXPO is just what it is. All this of course IMHO. It can't arrive soon enough for me

The reason for the 1st place payout is that he pays real deep into the field, something like 200 places, not exactly sure the percentage but I think 25% or so of the field, which takes from the top payouts.

Guys,

There is a $25 per entry "registration" fee. Even with 855 entries in the Open last year, the SBE only paid out 64 places. 33 - 64 paid $430. Enough to cover most players expences to come. In the Seniors, they paid the top 32 with $400 going to 17 - 32. The first place payouts of $5000 and $3000 have been the same for many years. Remember, from the minute you get there, the tables are FREE during tournament hours. Want to gamble? The tables are a quarter per in that area. Absolutely the best value for a player. Want to play all night? $10. Last but certainly not least, you're playing on small Diamond tables with Simonis 860 cloth and Aramith Super Pro balls. Compare that to the $1 per game at the BCAPL's for the same conditions. Good value indeed! See you there.

Yes Lyn this is pretty much correct.

There is always speculation about this, and I appreciate your explanation. Entry in any of our events includes a 4-day pass to the expo, which is normally $35. Out of the $75 collected, $50 goes into the prize pool and usually a bit more. All of this money is paid out, in what is hopefully a good amount all the way down the line.

My dad would rather boost the payouts down the line instead of add more for first. He feels this is better for more players, a chance to win some decent money without having to be the sole winner.

If anyone has any questions, you can always call and speak with my dad directly at 609-652-6116. I will address any questions here that I can, but I havent had much time to be on AZ lately, so I may not be able to get back to you quickly.

ive been goin to that tourney and making the 8.5hr drive for the last 3 yrs i love it yes the payout is a little ok alot light but if u ask allen it goes to everything else going on like the pro tourney and the trickshot stuff which i dont understand why us amatures have to pay for that stuff its really not fare but not to many people must be mad at it because like me they come back year after year next to vegas bar table tourneys this is the best bar table tourney for the middle of the road player with action at every corner so what i am saying i guess is im happy for the tourney to still be goin on and congrats to allen to making 4 times more then the average pool player does in a year in that 4 day event but i would like to see him do a amature tourney with a bigger payout for us amatures

Not very many, maybe 2 or 3. They all talked like they were Professionals...

Allen,

Hope I didn't sound like I was speaking for the SBE. Once you add in the fee to browse the cue exhibition, the $75 really becomes a great value for the players.

Also agree on the payouts. If more went to first place, it might not be possible to pay down as far as you do. I would rather get the $430 and cover my expenses than finish 65 - 128 and get $150 or $200. Most everyone complains about some fascet of the event. Keep doing what your doing. I feel it is for the greater good of the pool players! See you there.

thanks for all the replys,
but I don't think you can say take the fee to get in expo off the entry fee as some kind of great thing, I mean your playing in an event, of course you have to get in the door. well 855 x 75 =$64,125.00 say allen took $20,000 for promoting event, that leaves $44,125.00 right? how much was actually paid out? just food for thought to me, it is what it is and I would like to play there cuz I never have and it sounds like a good time. but some part of me always questions " where is all that money" lol I'm not knocking allen or any other promoter, they do a lot for pool and have to make money. I just ask myself sometimes how much is enough? thanks for everyones input, hopefully, with this crappy economy, this mason can make the trip. my b-day is in march too! would be a nice present to myself as well:smile:

oh, and paying 25% of the field is pretty much standard for any tourny, and I've been to a lot.

Do the math. Less than 10% of the field is paid in the Open. Slightly more than 10% in the Seniors. No shortage of players for either event. It proves if you put out an excellent product, customers will come even at higher prices!
