How many players here are shooting in a SPECIAL
Thanksgiving holiday weekend tournament? Not a weekly
tournament or monthly tournament, but some type
of annual or special tournament?

I am shooting in Shooters annual Thanksgiving weekend
tournament (Fri/Sat/Sun) Handicapped 9 ball tournament.
(handicapped from 2 to 12). There is $2,000 added and
a calcutta. 128 player entries, and it usually fills each year.

Tony Fargo won it last year.

Danny and Evelyn Dysart conduct this tournament every year,
and do a great job of it. Cue Repairs are onsite.

In Wichita or Olathe?

If it's in Wichita, How long ago did they start handicapping it?

Cheers,
RC

The tournament is in Wichita at Shooters. Been handicapped
quite a while now, about 5-6 years, I think. Before that, it was
the Kansas State 8 ball championships with $4,000 added.
We still get some very good players. Among past players
include Jesse Bowman and his brother, Chad Vilmont, Tony
Fargo, David Matlock, James Walden, Gabe Owen (previously),
Jr. Brown (hometown player), Scott Frost, and others.

Yeah, last time I played there was when Jesse, Chad and Jesse's brother were there. Wish I could get out there this year, but alas, stuck in sunny California :)

Is Perry still there? if so tell him I said hi.

Cheers,
RC

My buddy Perry is still there, as is Bob (on crutches, part owner) and Paul.
One of the nice things about the guys that weather all the years in a popular
Pool room, you become kind of like family in a way. I was the one, back then,
that published 'The Green Felt', a billiards newsletter for the Wichita area, free
of charge because I love the sport.

I'm playing in Indianapolis, on Friday after. APA handicaps 8-ball. I have to play as a super 7. Best of luck to all of you. Sam

I believe I read 'the green felt' a time or two. It's just odd that we only met a couple of times back then. I just read in another thread that you were in Indy for a while around then, I think our time there only overlapped by a few months perhaps. I was there from Nov. 97- March 99, but I didn't play a lot the first six months I was there.

I remember Bob, but I didn't know him that well. I knew Paul pretty well, but most of the names have faded and I'm left with faces and memories of good times. Watching Junior Brown and Dave Gomez trying to out gamble each other at flipping coins, tossing coins, tossing cards, anything but pool was great fun.

Cheers,
RC

Well, Jr. is due back to us on Dec. 7th after a 1 1/2 years of being away
for awhile. He has been Wichita's favorite son for over 30 years in Pool,
(other than Gabe's rise here and in Tulsa). The stories about Jr. are endless,
and reminescent of many great players past. The Pool scene always picks
up with Jr. around ... lol He is a character ... Jr. is famous for his pitching
coins at a match cover. It was really funny when Jr. lost a bet, and had
to shave his eyebrows off ... I still don't know how he gets guys on the challenge table to play him for $10 a game even, when these same guys want
the 7 from me for $2 a game .... but he does ...

I was in Indy from April '96 to May '97. I was on contract to Eli Lilly in
Information Systems. I lived up in NE area (nice area, nice apartments).
No one ever took me up on $1,000-1,500 a set offer, so I bought a new
'96 Mustang GT, all leather, big stero, 4.6 engine, 17" chromed wheels ...
I loved that car ...

Skeet there, a reporter of the Pool scene, gave me the nickname
of Snapshot when I was there, which became Scott 'The Shot' here in Wichita.

Maryland? If so, that must have been a road trip from when he lived
in New Orleans for 7 years. Otherwise, it was the other Jr. Brown that
plays good from Salt Lake City.
