How many here are big fans of 8 Ball Pool?

I love eight ball when it's played "take what you make" at the highest level.

I don’t like ‘take what you make” at the highest level...reeks of bar rules...
...extra element of luck

I saw Ronnie Wiseman make five low balls on the break once...
...cue ball was surrounded by high balls...it was a great break...he ran out on high balls.
...at “take what you make”...he had no chance of winning...on an excellent break.
...skill should be rewarded

Personally, I prefer “last pocket”....no call shots

the only people i ever knew that play last pocket are bar bangers
i think bca is the best rule set imo

punishes you for mistakes you make
table is open till you pot a ball

love potting the 8 in off a carom if the other guys ball is in the way

Open after break, BIH in kitchen on foul from break - anywhere after that, call shot and I'm a fan of the 3 foul rule. And you win, you break.

I don’t have a lot of experience at 8-ball...I liked to avoid the bar rules crowd.
...but the biggest money games I saw at 8-ball were “last pocket”
....it’s a good way to play

I find this whole thread intriguing, as if the OP doesn’t realize just how popular 8-ball is? There’s a disconnect here. And with so many rulesets as well as bar rules, it’s no wonder.

I generally play CSI rules or WPA rules, depending on how the other players want to play. But I certainly don’t mind playing slop rules.

Freddie <~~~ still loves 8-ball

Oh, I realize how popular 8 Ball is on the street. People were crapping on modern 9 Ball in the other thread; so I thought I'd gauge their interest in 8 Ball.

Growing up my grandpa preferred rotation but we played a lot of eight ball. At home we'd always play 8 ball and that's all that was played on bar tables in the 70s/early 80s where I would play.

Learned to play the 1 ball in one side pocket, 15 ball in the other, sometimes called a "bar rule" but was an official rule at one time - I assume that fell out of favor on coin operated tables for obvious reasons, but don't know that as a fact. Scratch = cue ball behind the "line" in the "kitchen".

Still my favorite game, and it's interesting how the rules have evolved.

I will play it in a bar.
I will play it in a hall.
At the pub I'll play off the wall.

I enjoy the game with bca.
I dont really care for the apa.
There's not alot of rule sets that I hate.
I'll even play bank the 8.

I like this game of 8 ball pool.
At times it makes me look a fool.

Don't they also play if you scratch on the eight you dont lose?:speechless:

Agreed that this incremental luck factor is the problem with take what you make. What I like about it, though, is that the runouts are, on average, a little tougher and I enjoy watching the premier players trying to negotiate the difficult runouts that arise.

I have never seen last pocket played on a nine footer, but I've seen it in the bars.

I enjoy 8 Ball. Open after the break, Ball in hand on fouls, Call the pocket and the ball, and the rule of Scratch on the break gives Ball in Hand ANYWHERE (love that rule when folks will play it, really punishes a careless breaker)...

I can see where many people prefer these rules " bcapl " .I had played bar rules all my life until a guy I met at a bar asked me to join his bcapl league. I really thought I was hot stuff once I got the rules down pat. Loved break and runs and table runs starting wth bih from anywhere. I played bcapl for about a year and quit pool entirely for 3 years or so.

Got back into league and it was apa here. My percentage of break and runs and table runs fell off with take what you make and behind the line on scratches on the break.

It was discouraging at first but then I realized ....more challenging and thus more satisfying to get a break and run or a table run with take what you make and bih behind the line rules.

I'll assume you mean BCAPL.

BCA rules are WPA rules, which has at least one major difference. The cueball is in hand behind the line on scratch on the break for BCA; cueball is a full-table ball in hand for scratch on the break for BCAPL (CSI). 99.3 % of league players don't realize that they're playing CSI rules, not BCA rules.

Freddie <~~~ head is spinning

I have a bar box at home and playing 9 ball or 14.1 just doesn't work on it for me.

That being said, I'm a fan of 8 ball and it's my game of choice.

BCAPL rules as they stand today. Never been a fan of the 3 foul rule, it changes the game play.

We play:

8 on the break gets spotted. Winner Breaks.

Scratch on any ball but the 8, equals Ball in Hand.

Scratch on the 8, or make the 8 prematurely, and you lose.

Must call your shot on the 8.

Other than ignoring the headstring after the break, and playing ball in hand; these are the common rules I've seen used all my life for 8 Ball.
