How many hours a week do you practice?!?

Just curious as to how many hours people put into practice, per week.

I talked to one of the top players in town (after league the other night)...he said at "least" 1 hour per day, if not more.

I have a demanding wife, demanding kids, & demanding job......I might put in 3 or 4 hours a week if I'm lucky. I truly love pool, wish I could reach my potential. I'm trying to be satisfied just being an average league player, but know I have it in me to be one of the best in town. Oh well.

I only get to play about 2-3 days a week... two days i might get to play 5 hours each.. one day is a tournament day.. which if i dont do good i might get to play two matches and out... dont really get to practice much.. if i cant find action on the other two days then i get to put in a couple hours practice.. but everytime i practice it helps.

Ideally i would like to practice 2 hours everyday.. then i will probably see some more improvments to my game. but 1 hour a day will keep your stroke in shape.

I don't get much action, so most of my table time is spent in practice--thank God I love to practice! I try to put in 2-3 hours a day at least 5 days a week, with the occasional sixth day thrown in. I would say that I get to play for about 6-10 hours of play per week on top of that.

I get in about 7 to 10 hours of pure practice, all on the weekend when I get home. I'm not counting league nights as practice.

12hrs per week, since w/o my truck.
20hrs+ per week with.
An aquaintenance of mine who plays very well had gotten me to practice more per week b/c he simply states that the more play time I can have on the table, the more I recoginze bad habits and how to overcome them.

I play about 4-6 hours MWF, 12 on Saturdays, and 4-6 on Sundays... I am a part-time student and I work full-time...if I could fit in more, I would!

I practice for about 20-30 minutes a day, three days a week. Any time longer that would be counter-productive......SPF=randyg

(It's not what you practice, but HOW you practice)

Well

I don't practice, but I play in tournaments every week. I have been playing 45 years, and I know most of the shots, and I have a real good memory. If I have a big hard tournament coming up, I will practice some, but usually most of my practice is only on banks.

Could you elaborate a little more on this, Randy?

I am actually trying to embrace this concept actually, since I have limited time. I play a few games of 8-ball, do alot of straight-in & angle drills also....I simply work on position as I play 8-ball, nothing specific.

I work full time, but i usually get about 20-40 hours playing time a week (practice, playing, & leagues), and i've only been playing for about 2 years.

obviously, i am single with nothing better to do.

20 years ago I used to practice 2 hrs M-F & 4 hrs on Sat & Sun. Now if I'm lucky I'll play one night with a friend & Thursdays in a 9 ball tourney. Wish I could get the hours in like I used to!

No problem.

In Pool School a student is issued seven "Mother Drills' to preform. When they return home they have a specific time frame to repeat all "Mother Drills". One "Mother Drill" at a time, no more than 15-20 minutes per drill. Each "Mother Drill" addresses a part of their game.

"Mother Drills" are the preamble to their practice routines. They spend about 15-20 minutes on a specialized practice routine, then they are done for that session.

The "normal" human being can focus on one thing for about 12 minutes before the brain wanders. Any time longer than that and bad habits could appear. Short, quick routines install habits faster than long sessions.

My workout looks something like this, three times a week.

1. 15 minutes of a selected "Mother Drill".
2. 15 minutes of a practice routine that is selected to improve one of my shortcomings.
3. Cold bottle of water and a quick review of what I just did.

Ideally I wish I could do a session in the AM and then another different one in the afternoon. But like most players, time is a factor. I try to make the most of my dedicated practice routines.

A person may be able to "hit" balls for 3-4 hours a day, but that's not Training or Practice, that's hitting balls.

More later.....SPF=randyg

Randy,

Could you explain a little of the differences between training and practicing?

Question for Randyg

I've been playing for a year and a half. I play (most of the time alone) 20-35hrs per week. I found drills on the net when I began, practiced a lot of them. I have an ex pro (doesn't play anymore) who's helping me. He gave me some tools (drills and practice aids such as banking, break, etc.).

Anyway do you think working on 5 drills a day... during 15-20 minutes each, break between each, would be productive?

What would be your practice session like I you had all the time in the world?
