Doesn't really matter for 90%+ of pool players. I broke and played with any housecue for decades and won plenty.
Then graduated to a McDermott back in the late '80s, and broke with a house cue mostly for about 5 years or so. Then started breaking with my McD after that. Got essentially the same results, but at least the tip on my McD was a lot more consistent than just any old house cue.
Basically did that until fairly recently when I began playing cues that had 11.6-8 diameter tips. They looked so skinny, I decided that I could probably crack them breaking, so I bought a dedicated break cue.
Through nearly 20 years I've never really noticed a huge different between breaking with a house cue/affordable playing cue. A decent tip is probably more important than who makes the stick.
