How many of you would play in this?

Please don't bash me for mentioning snooker in the main forum, but as some of you know a snooker tour will be starting up here in the US pretty soon and I was wondering how many of you pool players would want to try something different by maybe playing in one of the stops? I work with Josh Brothers who is a good pool player and he is going to come to one or two of the stops and give it a go. I think it would be a good experience for some of the many strong players who play Blaze, Joss etc every week to try something new as I think a lot you will suprised how good you will be at this game. I am not throwing out challenges or anything like that, I was just wondering what you guys all thought about trying this great game.

Interesting idea...

Seems like this would be a new challenge for some of the more the more accurate shooters to try. Will be very curious who will be willing to step up and see how they can do.

Snooker tournaments are a lot of fun to play in as the game really tests your stroke and there is not that much luck in it (kinda like straight pool). I guess I am surprised that tournaments basically don't exist over here and I am hoping that the upcoming tour will bring in some interest from the pool community and not just the very small core of snooker players here in the US. If there is any AZ'rs not too far from Philly who might be interested in trying something new I would be happy to get in some practice sessions to get whoever you are up to speed at this game. There is a table in Frazer and another one in Quakertown. I will be interested to see how Josh Brothers does when he tries snooker as he does shoot straight and is a talented pool player. I was a decent club player back when I played the game (not pro by any means) so hopefully I can still play a bit.

One reason you won't find any snooker tournaments is that in the vast majority of the country finding a place with multiple pool tables is easy, but finding a place with multiple snooker tables is not, plus there's a huge difference in the time it takes to play a match.

You are right about the multiple table problem, when we used to play regional tournaments back in Ireland most of the races were only to 2, because of the type of the game, the best players still usually won.

I think for this tour they are only going to play in clubs that have at least 2 tables and so far they have 4 or 5 places lined up. You I think I am just really curious to see some higher speed pool players try this because I am sure with a little table time they will pick this game up pretty quickly.

I like the game. It sure takes some getting used to though. We used to just bag the little balls and play 9-ball on the snooker tables because no none of us knew exactly how to keep score.

I could probably count on one hand the number of 6x12 tables in this country. And very few poolrooms have even one 5x10 "American" style snooker table. Just wondering how and where you will hold these events.

To answer your original post, I'm not one of the higher speed players you're talking about, but I'd love to try a snooker tournament if it were very near the DC area, low buy-in, and double-elimination or round-robin. I wouldn't spend a lot on gas or entry fee, because I know I don't have a prayer of winning any money, and I wouldn't want to play single elimination, because if I'm donating my entry fee I'd want to be guaranteed at least two matches.

It's not me Jay, it's the US snooker association that is putting the tour together. They are looking to start with at least 6 stops in CA(2), NY(2), Houston and Chicago. They already have some sponsership too.

I already know all the rooms except for Houston so I guess that is a start. I have nothing to do with it but as a fan of the game I think it would be great for snooker if they could get some interest from AZB.

You know snooker is not that much different to pool and it really isn't any harder, it's a fun and attacking game and having played in hundreds of tournaments (not in 11 years though) I know a lot of pool players would enjoy the experience just like I enjoyed playing pool for the first time when I moved to the states.

I'd help you fill the field Ray! What the hell, I'm hitting the ball well.

and, Raybo is being VERY modest about his skills people....I heard the rocket was ducking him!! :) J/K

let me know,
G.

You're in for a heck of a surprise if you ever get over to San Gabriel. The Embassy Club has enough 6x12's that you're going to have to take off your shoes to count.

In Mountain View (about 10 minutes from where I work) there are two rooms with two snooker tables each. There are also two 6x12 golf tables (covered with worsted cloth) within the same radius, but they're not really suitable for snooker.

Good to hear from you Gerry, you know you are still the only person in the USA that has a winning record against me at snooker! I am still waiting for that rematch!! Seriously I am excited that something is happening here so when they confirm some dates we can get together and play some snooker and I can blow the cobwebs off my Parris which should be fun. Say hi to Jimmy for me, I have to pull his number out of my broken phone and give him a call. Also Gerry I am 100% against the rocket (1990 UK under 18's I beat him 3-2 in the last 16)

Hi Jay how are you?

Bob's right, and in New York City there are at least four billiard rooms with three or more full-sized snooker tables. We are going to use a room in Brooklyn next February for the tour that has six tables, all kept in immaculate condition to international specifications.

Best wishes.

Alan.

Hi Ray and thank you so much for your interest and support in this new snooker tour.

It is going to be small at the start of course, but we have to start from some kind of level and hopefully it will grow.

We look forward to having you play in some of the events.

Best wishes.

Alan.

This game used to be a big part of my life and I really miss not having it around anymore. Alan if there is anything I can do to help, just let me know. Any stop I can make it to, I will be there. If you still have Karen Corr's number, give her a call and let her know about this, if she was free she and Julie might give it a go too.
