well its finally starting to come together, the contractor is coming tomorrow to install the beam so i can remove the pole in my basement den. This is going to give me a 16x26 room that will be my poolroom/bar. End of the month im putting in a ceiling, and heres the question. I saw a poolroom on the net where they used those recessed spotlights built into the ceiling instead of a traditional pool table light, and it looked great. The ceiling is already low in my basement, so this would be a great choice instead of having a light hanging down. Does anyone know what the "proper" amount of light is? I know where my pool table is going to be set up in the room, so I could put in as many recessed lights over this area that i needed to....just wondered what kind of number im looking for (total watts, illums, etc?) helpppppppppp

If you are set on the can/recessed lights in the ceiling, I would go with as many as you can squeeze in without it looking tacky. 6 or so..... If you arent sold on the cans I would look into a commercial flourescent fixture with 4 8' bulbs, and an open grate style diffuser. This can be set into the ceiling as well, and you wouldnt have to worry about not enough light.

Hi,

I had a similar setup at my old house using recessed canned lights. I used 8 lights. One can over each pocket and a can each on the head/foot spot. I had no issues whatsover with shadowing and the install looked very good, IMO. I think the type of bulb is just as important though. I went with 45W daylight halogens and installed a dimmer switch to adjust the light intensity. If low ceiling is an issue I don't think you can go wrong with this approach.

The option posted earlier regarding flourescent tubes would work just as well, although I dont think would look as nice.

good luck with your choice and post pics when room is complete!

Im in the process of finishing my attic, however the ceiling is high enough for a traditional hang from the ceiling light. I went with a diamond light.

I'm going to eventually do the same thing that your doing as far as the room is concerned. My ceilings right now are about 8 1/2 - 9 ft. But once the ceiling is finished it'll probally be closer to 8 feet.

I currently have my Diamond Tournament Model light hanging about 36" inches above the slate. I honestly wouldn't think of playing without it. When I move the Table to the new section I'm going to put in recessed lights to more or less frame the Table on a Dimmer just to control the ambient light around the room but not for the main table lighting.

just my .02 worth.

GET THE MOST LIGHT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a friend who makes handmade pooltable lights for a living. They look a lot like Diamond lights. He'll make them as cheap or fancy as you want. He won't mind....704/819-6749...his name is Mark. Tell him I sent you from AZB...he'll cut you a real deal. Seriously...you'd be amazed how inexpensive he can make a custom light with 4ft or 8ft tubes...way cheaper than most horrid store crap. Doesn't hurt to ask him...;)
He made mine...its not for sale.

Scott,
I have an oak flourescent 4 bulb fixture with bulbs that you could mount directly to the ceiling. I had it over my table for years and it did a great job. I'll make you a good deal on it if you are interested. Personally,I prefer flourescent to incandescent lighting.
