How Much Would You Charge?

A friend, has an extra shaft from a Q I made him. He wants me to make a straight grained maple butt. No stain or rings, just clearcoated. What would you charge him?...JER

Take your normal price for the simplest cue you make, and consider how much time you put into that cue.

Estimate how much time it will take you to make this very plain butt, and use the time ratio to calculate the price.

If you will spend 3/5 of the time it would normally take you, charge 3/5 of the normal price.

Just my analytical thought.

Depending on your pricing structure, I would take price you charge for a complete wrapless cue (I do it a little different - price of butt + shaft) less price of a second shaft. Then adjust it a little if you fit the shaft to the butt for him. Then you may need to adjust the price if he is a really good friend and you are building this as a favor. This is really an interesting business - I really truly have gained some friends after building a cue for them as customers.

If is just "A friend" give him some discount like say 20-25% off your regular price. If that is your good friend knowing that person for a while give him 30- 40% off. If that is your best friend knowing for all your life then you know what? is going to be parts and no labor...

Well, it's basically as much work as doing a sneaky (minus the shaft) so if your basic sneaky starts at $250 and shaft is $100 I would say $150 but it is a friend of yours, so maybe a hundo?

Figure it as repair work. What do you charge for a finish? Install a pin? A joint and butt cap and although there won't be much money in the butt material your time for incrementally turning down is certainly worth something and it's easier to fit a shaft to a butt than vice versus. Add it all up and deduct 25%.

I'm not a cuemaker, but as a buyer I would expect to pay whatever you would normally charge for the cue...minus the cost of a shaft.

Make Butt Only

To use with the extra shaft? Wrap?

Personally, I don't make half of a cue. I make a cue which consist of a butt and one shaft.

If I were to make a butt only out of seasoned wood (straight grain Maple) I would charge $300.00. That is $150.00 to build the cue and $150.00 to finish it.

Good Cuemaking,

Discounts for friends.. where does that end??

Good Cuemaking,

You'd spend dammed near as much time on it as a complete wrapless cue and your time is your LIFE!

I was working on this Q & muttering to myself, when my wife asked me what the matter was. I told her that a plain jane all maple butt, is just not very creative. Now it's been my observation that they have something that we men folk lack...COMMON SENSE. She says "How many people on that AZ web site do you think would LOVE, to be able to make that Q"? Of course as usual, she's right. THANKS CONNIE...JER

I feel the same way you do Jerry. I have not built a plain cue since I don't know when. It is kinda fun building something I like the looks of, but it is just plain old work building one that does not interest me.

I tryed to make it a little more than he wanted. I cut it above & below the wrap area & added a single black ring( I also added a 3/8-10 screw for balance). Then above the butt cap I also added the same ring. Since he wanted an ALL Maple butt, I used a Birdseye Maple butt cap. The joint ring had to match his existing shaft ring. NO STAIN, just plain straight grained Maple. I kind of like it...JER

It is nice that you came to like the cue as you were building it. When you like it. It is art. When you don't it is just plain old work! Not saying work is bad cause we all got to eat. But art I like, work I just do!
