How NOT to clean your cloth

Well, I would have had my table setup today but it appears I made a slight oops. When I bought this 1931 Brunswick Harrison the guy gave me a used Simonis cloth he had on it. Wasn't in terrible shape. Had a few dark stains and some obvious spots from breaking. It was dirty..I washed it :nono::nono:
I knew it was wool so I washed in in cold water and a VERY low heat. Put it on the table and it shrunk about 12 inches lengthwise. No amount of stretching would get it close. We tried for 30 minutes and no difference even with wetting it.
But that's OK. The new Simonis will be on Wednesday or Thursday along with new rail cloth and shimmed pockets. A 4 day wait and $200 mistake but I'll have a better table when it's done.

Pics coming soon

The guy setting up my table said he had been wanting to wash one in a washer to see if it was affected at all. I experimented for him without even knowing
And even though I was in the washer for about 30 minutes I still got a LOT of blue chalk out of it when rubbing a white cloth over it

you silly goose.

you're supposed to wash the cloth when it's installed, like I did.

best,

Nice theater seats! I've had my eye on some like those for a while...

Do you mean you dried it on low heat? I think with wool you can wash it in cold water but you have to hang it up to let it dry. I have heard of pool room owners taking old cloth to the car wash and pressure washing them and then putting them back on the tables.

Once wool shrivels from heat drying you can't get it back. Like wool sweaters that shrink, once it's done it's done.

JB, yes washed it then put in the dryer on low. Should have hung it or used air dry setting. On the plus side, rail will get recovere and shimmed now

So do you think you could tighten loose cloth by wetting it all the way around under the rails and drying it with a hair dryer on high? Only shrinking the part the ball doesn't roll on?

That might work but you could also end up with a line of shrinkage that is uneven. Better to wet the whole cloth and dry it all at the same time I would think.

Might try it on my table.

It's all fun and games until the slate buckles.

I think that the cloth will give way before it buckles the slate. I was not joking either about trying it. I am thinking about getting the cloth wet, soaking up the excess moisture with the wet/dry vac and then blow drying it to see if it tightens up. I plan to recover the table anyway in the coming month so I have nothing to lose. If the slate buckles then I will have the table come out and put new slate on.

But I seriously doubt that this will happen, guess I won't know until I try.
