How old should our youth players be before they start gambing in pool?

I think the question assumes that gambling is automatic in pool. This is IMHO one of the notions that harms the sport.

The first notion should expect that there is no gambling at all as part of the sport. Any gambling is in addition to or ancillary to the sport. Yes, I know how hokey that will sound to many, but I really believe that.

The gambling notion as a whole, regardless of whether it involves pool, should only be engaged in after a person is an adult and has their own financial means I think, so age is only part of it.

By the same token, if I found out for instance that my college age child was gambling while I am contributing the brunt of their financial support then I want my percentage as their stakehorse if they win anything. And I would collect it, for sure.

Amen! I do not play for money, and I never want to. I have so much fun enjoying this sport, why would I want to ruin it and make it about money? I took a co-worker up on a very cheap bet; 1st to 5 for 20 bucks, and it was not a fun match. The denomination was clearly not an issue, but we ended up playing chicken-shit safety pool instead of having fun and taking the risky shots. If my kid wanted to wage money on any sport, I would question where that even came from, because it certainly was not from me.

I started out playing at a Boys Club of America-Miami Florida, about 1955. Gambling was a BIG NO NO. We played for PENNIES back than, and if you were caught you were suspended from the Boys Club of America. Suspensions last a week or two.

I came home many times with wild stories of all the PENNIES I found on the walk home. I stated playing pool at about SEVEN.

I'm of the opinion, as are many others here, that as a parent I would not encourage my son, or daughter, to gamble, but rather leave it open in order for them to make their own decision when they have reached maturity. :)

is this a joke?

I saw keith at 16 shannon at 13(cussing and disrespecting Dallas West in a torn.)so many young players caught up in the trap.Take them out show them how to get the cash, show them the burntout druggies that cant make a ball if the mixture aint right. Seen 100,s of them.hey son get up wake up its 8pm dont you have get to the poolhall. No you cant have $20 your 40 get a job.

I'm 15 and I dont gamble on my pool game no matter how good i shoot that day and I wont until I'll earn my own money trough hard work.

I've heard of studies that say that human brain has not even fully matured 'physically' until on average 26 yrs. old. I have a 21 year old that is very intelligent but in no way a mature adult. So I would say somewhere between 26 & 30 years old. I know many will disagree, but I tend to agree with Scott Lee's earlier post.

Regards to all,

18? 21? A different number?

Does it make a difference if they are not betting their own money? Does it make a difference if the gambling session is monitored by a parental guardian?

What's your opinion?

You start all of these threads and never state your own opinion on the subject.

It is curious.

minors should not be gambling period.

I agree...let's make a law against it. While we're at it, let's outlaw smoking, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs too.

Oh, wait a minute...those laws already exists.

How many times must we endure the tyranny of prohibition before you realize that it just doesn't work?

The content on this site is less pool every day. save the earth... lol.com.

The subject of this thread is gambling, not pool.

Most parents are likely to discourage their children from gambling/smoking/drugs/etc. However, some children will still do it. The real question is whether or not you would rather your child gamble in an established business or throwing dice in some dark alley.

You must realize that you can't control people. If I want to shoot heroine, I'm going to do it. If I can't get it at walgreens, I'll get it from the corner drug dealer. As a parent, which would you prefer?

I rarely play for money, and never big money. I don't believe you should teach your kids its alright. How many gamblers/hustlers have you heard of that died without 2 nickles to rub together?

Do you think all people are the same, any one 12 is the same as anyone else at 12. Do you think something magical happens at 18 and 21. I think the champions were gambling at age long before 18. Keith McCready got kicked out of Junior high for having to much money, He busted the $40 payball game on the big killer snooker table. He was playing with adults and he was probably without adult supervision. This was fine for Keith most kids were not there at that age I know Daulton gambled and at high values at a young age his dad was with him when I saw him matching up if you could only here him talk and seen what the balls did you would have said he was a grown man. The great players from Indy gambled at very young ages in the late 70's early 80s George and both Brians. I was gambling myself since I was 12 or 13 I do not play like the above but I won and lost playing adults when I was an early teen low stakes but matching up all the same. I was no kid in a candy store so I was fine.

There is no way to set a single age that is fair to the mature kid and yet protects the lambs and that line of kids coming out of the candy store. The problem I see is no kids are now leaving the candy store and stopping by the pool room they are going home to the video game. There are some young great players but they are fewer these days.

If you need an age 5 yrs old is the correct answer.
