i really want to know how the state of Montana does not have one pool hall..... i am moveing to MT Helena to be more specific. called around. no 9 foot tables in the whole city.. only bars with bar boxes.... so my question being.. do you think a place without a pool hall would do well in a place like helena mt.. i would def open one.. not an A player or anything but. i cant live some were with no pool hall.... there is no way. is this a problem in other states?? wow.
 
I remember hearing about a place that used to have some 9ft tables, think it was the Palace or something? I also have heard there are a couple of old timers out there that used to be road legends, Tom something in the Missoula area.
 
Actually there are three "pool rooms" with 9' tables in Montana. Two are in Billings (Breakers and Stix), and one is in Missoula (Palace Billiards, which may or may not still be there). None of them are particularly great. The best 9' tables are to be found in the two university gamerooms...MSU and UM. Helena is a small market, and their players are geared to barbox play (as are most other players in MT). IMO, a stand-alone poolroom (one with no liquor license) would not make it. Liquor licenses are very difficult to come by...you either have to win one in an annual lottery, or buy an existing one (for whatever the market will bear...I have seen them go for $500K). Good luck with your quest.

As a sidenote, it is ironic that in the late 70's/early 80's Montana was the headquarters for the Corner Pocket chain of billiard rooms, which were in several areas of the country. When legalized gambling came to Montana in the mid-80's, it spelled the doom of the poolrooms, which all became casinos.
