Well, is there anyway/tool that will give you a factory quality scuff and shape? I bought the cue cube, and it blows!!!

I like the Willard Dime shaped scuffer. It lasts a pretty good while and you will probably lose it before you wear it out. At about $6 each they are reasonably priced.

How often do you have to scuff your tip, mine I have to do it like everyday.... but then again I play alot.

Does the williard give a good scuff?

I either use the Willard Scuffer which gives a really good scuff  or I use the tip tapper to rough up the tip to make it more readily accept chalk every time I play.

Extremely hard tips may need attention every couple of hours of play.

Some people like the multi-needle shaped device that puts lots of small holes in the tip for hard tips but I don't like them. I pushed my thumb into one of the large diameter ones by accident and scared half the pool hall to death. :D
(It was in my pocket and had no cover and somehow I managed to insert my thumb in it rather deeply).

If you use the Willard Scuffer every day you will have to replace your tip every two-four months. The tip tapper is a flat device that you use just to roughen your tip, not shape it. The Willard will shape it to whichever size you buy (nickel or dime shape radius) but it will take off some of your tip every time.

Thank you very much for replying, I am going to get both just for the record.;)

Sniper!

I use a sniper tip, once it is shaped it last a long time, and I hardly ever have to scuff it.

As for stuffing and shaping I don't think anything does a better job than the sandman.

There has been numerous threads on what is the best though.

Triangle tips hold shape. Once you shape/fix it, it can last quite awhile. Williard shaper is a popular tool. I usually use a metal trimmer sandpaper to get the basic shape before using the Williard.

I've posted before about the Gilbert I had with Triangles. Mushroomed EVERY time I played with it. My Dishaw has two Mooris and two LePros and I haven't scuffed either in a VERY long time.

Scuffed my sniper once since I've had it. Put them on and play.

I cut a piece of pvc pipe in half length-wise and then into whatever length I want. Then put 80 grit sticky back sandpaper in it. Works great. Costs almost nothing and you can give them to friends just for the fun of it. Probably requires a table saw or a band saw.

I use both the Willard tool and tip tapper on a regular basis and am very happy with both.

Some people who use the layered tips don't like the Willard Scuffer because you have to kind of grind the scuffer into the tip and they think that the layers will come unglued. I used Moori's for a pretty long time and didn't have any problems like that....

Tip pick is the name of that devil device for opening up your thumb. Had to have a few beers in me to remember. :p

Dude.... get a willard to get you started.. the round it off to your liking with some rough sandpaper...you can do the pvc thing .. or just hold the paper in your hand...

I have an 8 cent tip... I turn in down with a dime willard and smooth it out with the paper...takes a little getting used to.. but works

One more vote for the Williard. If you've never seen one, they come with a notch in the perimeter you can use to check your tip's profile. You may find you don't need to shape your tip as often as you think once you check it in the notch. A lot of guys gripe about tearing layers loose, but that won't happen if you keep the pressure light. You're just trying to shape the tip, not rip it off the ferrule. I use the sleeve-type shapers at home, but there's a Williard, a tip-pik, and a business-card size piece of 120 sandpaper in my case always. One more thing about a tip-pik; Tap it lightly straight into the tip-don't twist it or you'll do more harm than good. Hope this helps.

1. OUCH

2. Same procedure here. Use the Willard once every 3 weeks or so (Triangle med. tip) and scuff up the tip with the tip tapper before every session...

I have a custom made shape tool.. It's the nuts.. the guy who makes them (local) sells them for $25. I'll post picks if I get a chance.

I use LePro tips and beak with them about ten times when they are new then I use a Willard. I took the time to grind a dime radius into the Williard and it works fine. I haven’t need to scuff it in about two months and I play an hour or so a day.

The Moori tip on my other shaft plays the same way but then I don’t use a lot of power on my shots most of the time. Seems to me that if the tip is holding chalk it doesn't need to be scuffed.

So I guess if the tip is holding chalk then it does not need to be scuffed? When do you know when you need to scuff it?

When it is glazed over and not holding chalk.

Some people scuff it every time they pull it out of the bag. This is not necessary normally.

The Willard is great for overall work but for everyday maintenance such as taking the shiny spot off after a miscue I use a self adhesive sanding disc of pretty coarse grade folded over on itself to form a half circle. It's firm , cheap ,easy to carry, and lasts forever
