if you ever experienced "dead stroke" it is the most unbelievable feeling in the world. you can't miss or do anything wrong in dead stgroke, the problem is no human can summon up dead stroke at will. however, here is a way, to try and get to it. try playing like you don't care about anything that will lead to your next shot! it sounds like pool suicide, but it's gold! if you want dead stroke, just make the balls in the pockets, without any regard to position, pattern play, or anything else! after just pocketing your balls for 20 mins, all of a sudden, everything comes into AUTOMATIC focus! it's amazing! all of a sudden your speed control, and psoition and pattern play are pin point perfect! why this happens? i'm not sure. maybe, by giving your brain and left brain a break, the freenesss, warms up the left side of the brain, and everything falls ointo place? try this excerise the next time your scraping bottom, and you'll see.

I read a book back around 1985 called "The Inner Game of Tennis". It is based on tennis but the author said it applies to all sports. Basically it states that the subconcious mind never makes a mistake, so don't think and just play. My wife tells me to this day "stop thinking stupid" and shoot. Think about when you hit "dead stroke" the most. Probably when you stopped for lunch and decided to hit a few balls, looked at the clock thinking I only got a little bit of time left. All of a sudden you"re running out and don"t want to leave, looking more at the clock, thinking about being late for work, boss will be mad, running racks you never get out of. Next thing you know you"re 2 hours late, boss will be mad so I'll just call the office and say I'm sick. After you make the call, you start to think about all those racks you ran and then all of a sudden you start missing some shots. Like they say, "pool is fun", so just enjoy it and stop thinking. The book really does make a lot of sense. Sam

P.S Bernie you're so right, Dead Stroke is the truly unbelievable.

I agree it's a great book, i also read it years ago, and re-read parts of it after i saw it recommeded on a site for pool. It is a great book for any athlete, and can be applied to lots of other things. The author is a long time tennis pro(instructor) and i would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a teacher or plans on teaching anything. He goes into a lot of detail about instructing beginner players and his approach to teaching.

The Inner Game Of Tennis is an Unbelievably good read and definitley goes hand in hand with aquiring dead stroke.I also like Bob Fanchers "The Pleasures ofSmall Motions" He adheres to doing hard work and aquiring great knowledge via drills and lots of practice. He wants the reader to enjoy pool and "The Pleasures of Small Motions" while building a stroke in practice. Once your CPU has all this knowledge,in games, you just simply visulize the shot and let it go.
The more the stored knowledge, the easier the mental game is . Deadstroke is doing things instinctivly using knowledge stored in your CPU from dedicated practice.

Nothing kills flow (or deadstroke) more than thinking too much while playing.Thinking things like head down, light grip, long follow etc. etc are all best left during your practice time.

You got that right. I've been trying to concentrate on delivering my stroke in a certain way, keeping head down, stay down after stroke, and pausing before last backstroke this weekend. I was playing straight with a buddy last night and kept missing straight in shots. Finally on the last game, I relaxed and just started playing and things went much better, beat him about 50-30.
