Neil said:Then you still have the problem of the 2-9. Although that is a viable option. My real point is sometimes it is to your advantage to have the cb jump over obstructing balls to gain position. Something that I think is often overlooked in possible shot options.
Neil said:Last night I had this situation. My opponent scratched on the break and left me this. The one is questionable on whether or not I can get a good hit past the 8 to make it in the bottom left corner. I could play safe, but didn't like that option because I didn't see where it would get me anywhere. I could hook him, but I figured that the guy I was playing would fly at them and mess up the layout. I knew the only problem balls were the one and the two-nine.
What I did was put the cb where shown, used a jump shot to clear the edge of the 8 and to get over the 3, broke out the 2-9 on the same shot, and ran out.
The point is- sometimes you can use a jump shot to clear other balls for position... a shot I seldom see used. But does come in handy.

Neil said:Thanks, but it's not very difficult. You just have to line up the carom angle off the one. Yes, safes are an option. It was a race to three, and I figured my opponent wouldn't get out anyway. So it was a good time to practice it in a game situation. (race to 3 small tournament)
The whole point of this thread was to point out an often overlooked option.
Neil said:Obviously, even though I have several times pointed out the purpose of the thread, you still seem to have missed it.
And, to answer your question- against the same player, race to 9, I probably would have shot the 3 into the 2-9 to break them out for an easy runnout after he missed something along the way.![]()
Patrick: Ever the right choice? Well, since I did run out, that makes at least once.
By the way, there was no 3 foul rule.
To all, even with the safe, to where you break out the 2-9 on your next ball in hand, there still is no guarantee of a shot on the 2 afterwards.
