I have a very old Hoppe 1pc cue. The woods are Purpleheart and maple. I turned the butt of the cue down just a few thou on my lathe. I was pretty amazed at the color of the wood. It was the deepest and yet the brightest purple. I have never seen Purpleheart wood like this. In fact I have never seen Purpleheart half this nice looking. It looks like a neon sign its so deep purple and yet so bright at the same time.

How do I keep it this color?
Does the Purpleheart turn brown because of a reaction to the electromagnetic radiation of light or a chemical reaction to one of the gases in the atmosplere? Anyone know what I need to do to retain the neon like purple color this wood?

Thanks,
Eddie

Pictures please

I am not sure how to keep the purpleheart purple but I would love to see some pictures as I have a cue on order with purpleheart wood in the cue.

I built one for a guy about two years ago and it is still really purple. I don't know if it is the light or the air that chnages the color of the wood. My buddy did a prefinished floor out of purpleheart and where it is in the sunn by the sliding glass door it turned brown in 3 months. Light .... air .... combo I don't know.. I am curious to see what others think.

Set it in the sunlight inside your shop in the window :) Just wait it will turn back purple if it is purple heart :) I think they call it oxidation - KellyGuy where are you when we need you!

The purple turns a wow! tone with a little exposure to sunlight, if it's some of that really good stuff, which it sounds like you may have. I don't like to put it in direct sunlight, but bright areas of indirect sunlight work fine.

I don't think it's the sun that deepens the purple but the heat from the sun. Put it near a register or light or any heat source and it will still deepen the tone. The only way to keep purple heart purple though is to stain it purple. Otherwise it will turn brown over time.

I am not real sure how much light affects it, but I agree with Dick about the heat.

Have you ever cut a piece on your bandaw, and paused even for a few seconds in the cut before finishing? Where you pause, a little heat builds up and you have a line of very deep purple.

Here is a picture with two cues I'm working on. Both sets of points were cut from the same board. The only difference is the 6 pointer has been sitting around for a month since cue and the 4 pointer I just cut yesterday for the first time.

I've often noticed some simular on the faces if done slowly and heat builds up. the face will be a deeper color then the sides of the cue that were cut under power. Greg

I aggree PH seems to be at it's best right after a fresh cut. I prefer to seal right after a final cut if possible in hopes of sealing It in. I have hung them in the lights to brighten them up, but nothing like the fresh cut look.

BTW nice color combinations in those cues.:) Greg
