How To Make Custom Cues

Any advice as to how to start? I seem video tapes for sale other than that I have no clue. There are about dozen well known custom cue maker's in my area of Los Angeles from Tad, Zyler, AC, Gina, and a few more. It would be really interesting to get into it. I been a self employed auto mechanic for 15 years and an actor for 6 years. So, there is a mechanical and creative side in me and making cues seems to interest me at this moment. :) :p  :o

ONE WORD Apprenticeship

You can find most of the technical aspects here but being "custom" you have to learn much more than that. I try to read up as much on a customers post and really try to understand their likes and dislikes in the game and its implement. I then figure out these things that I learn into the structural and aesthetic composition of their cue.

Safety first! if you hurt yourself you'll diminish your ability (limitation to physical and mental capability as a result of trauma) to express yourself fully in your craft.

Chris Hightower's book and DVD's

Get Chris Hightower's(cueman) book and DVD's. Comparatively cheap and will give you a good idea of what is involved. If you are still interested you can buy Chris's equipment or there are a handful of other routes to go.

Cuemaking isn't as dirty or hazardous as being an auto mechanic although it does have it's risks. It doesn't require the overall knowledge either but you do have to be able to precision cut and fit things together to be a decent cue maker. Learning what components to combine and what will hold them together is a major portion of what you need to learn. A good bit to learn pertaining to woodworking in general but not rocket science.

Although there may be an overabundance of people who are getting into cue making at the moment, like every other field there is always room for one more quality operation.

Come on in, the water is fine!
