How to make perfect rack outline on cloth?

Here's Earl's break ball (just before he missed it) after rack 14. Legal?

By the way, he measured its clearance by placing two other balls in the rack next to it. Legal?

The rules state that in/out will be determined by outline of the triangle. The ball was in the rack. This is exactly the sort of break ball position I was talking about. The nine ball should have been spotted at the head of the table.

... However it doesn’t stipulate the dimensions of that triangle. I see no reason that couldn’t be a smaller triangle, just like the photo of one shown here in a previous post.
What if I can get the chief editor of the World Standardized Rules to give a ruling on what sort of triangle should be used?

I do agree that the rules should be more specific, but there has been no problem in the past. The worst triangle previously involved was the Diamond thick and pointy wooden triangle and people simply dealt with the minor annoyance of having a few more balls in the rack.

Seems like someone could come up with a specialty higher quality triangle (not wood) ideal for 14.1 use, that the walls would be no more than 3/16-inch wide all the way around, even on the three points. Anyone know what triangle currently on the market that would come closest to that?

I think the Delta-13 is the best for the purpose and it is fairly thin. I'm guessing about 1/4-inch.

forever we had no lines on the table. what we did was put the rack on the table and if if hit the break ball the break ball was in. simple as that. the rack used, was the rack used to gauge the ball.

I used a black G2 0.7 point pen to draw my long string and 14.1 outline.

Prior to this I marked the center spot using a fine point Sharpie for Cowboy, but found the Sharpie wasn’t that sharp and bled into the cloth a little. The G2 pen worked out better when I marked the Billiard spot.

It was tricky drawing the rack outline myself, next time I’ll have someone hold the rack in place so I can trace in a single pass. I have a Delta 13 rack.

The factory rack from the Gold Crown is perfect for 14.1 - slightly thinner than a Delta-13 and robust enough to rely on

This picture is a bit deceiving as I don't have my boom set up to get the camera directly over the rack. In the picture, it appears to show the 6" mark above the rack edge, when in reality is in exactly on the rack edge. It measures between 5/16 and 6/16 inch, so my best guess is 11/32".

AND, since actually laying the rack on the table (to determine whether a likely break ball was in) was often risking a foul, we would merely hover it above (typically).

What is that spot on the vertical line a number of inches below the rack for, roughly where the black would be spotted for snooker?

Yes, though I used it briefly for English billiards to spot the red. Probably won’t bother to mark it again when the table gets recovered someday.

The corners of the Delta are way too big. With the corner balls in the rack it looks like the end of the triangle is a mile away. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Compare it with the pictures of the Brunswick rack.

The Delta 13 Select does not have the added space on the 3 vertices that the Delta 13 Elite has, which would make it far better for 14.1 use. I think that’s the model Bob was referring to.

Ae you serious? Pencil on cloth would smear everytime you touch or clean cloth

100%, Here is my table. I only have a line on it for one pocket and not the rack. Haven't really played straight pool on this table so no need for the rack outline. This line is a year and a half old. Table gets cleaned every Sunday. Brushed down, vacuumed and then the simonis X cleaner last. No smearing at all. I get more smearing from the spot than from
the pencil line. I also have a line for the kitchen. This is my method and it works for me. I have Simonis 860 HR.

This shows that the line can be nearly invisible from a distance but perfectly visible when you are using it.

Yes, these lines tend to fade over time, even when using a sharpie fine point permanent marker. We use a light blue color marker on our tables, which blends in better with the tournament blue Simonis cloth, but does require me to redraw the lines maybe every 3-4 months.
