How to Make the 9 ON THE BREAK … It’s Not Just Luck

FYI, I just posted a new video that demonstrates various techniques for getting a “golden break” in 9-ball, where you pocket the 9 “on the snap.” Being smart and using good technique can help you win more games. Check it out:

Content:
0:00 - Intro
0:45 - Cut Break
2:26 - Combo With Back Ball
---- 4:19 - natural 8 kiss
---- 5:18 - pocketing other balls
7:18 - Gaps Behind the 9
9:13 - Lucky Kiss, Carom, or Combo

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!
Doc a question ? How many of the 9 ball breakers new in advance the pocket location? Guy

I'm not sure what your mean. Do you mean: Did the pros know the pocket to which the 9 would head before hitting the break?

With the 9-on-the-spot-cut-break, they hope it will go in either side or bottom corner, but they can't predict exactly where and how (cut or bank) it will go. They are just trying to get a hit on the 9, hoping it will find a pocket.

Now if there is a gap behind the 9, and you break from the opposite side of the table from the gap, then you can predict the corner the 9 will head to fairly reliably.

Do you bet your money in advance on the 9 ball pocket and will it work 80% of the time, If so this is a grand solution... Guy

As I showed in the video, from the center, hitting the 1 at a slight angle is best; otherwise, the 8 and 9 tend to head straight up table. But if you are hitting it hard aiming dead center, it is likely you won't hit it perfectly square anyway. I certainly saw the 1 and 9 coming to rest close together up table a lot during my filming.
You guys should get together and have a 9on the break contest

I heard Danny D. one time say he played a player that broke 6 golden 9's in conscision... I one time played a set where the player broke 5 golden 9's in conscision, I wrote all down as luck... Guy

allot of luck. but thats why you dont let someone rack for themselves. how stupid is that.

and nine ball breaks are a joke. all balls should be spotted that are made on the break for the pros.

for the rest of the world the break means little.

Caroming into the 9 with the cut break is not done to “expect” to pocket the 9. It is done to “have a chance” to pocket the 9. An occasional win on the break can offer an important advantage.

I’ve had quite a bit of success getting the 9 to fly up table and either into the sides or upper corners by setting the cue ball in the dead center and breaking square on into the center of the 1 ball, very hard. Not necessarily the best break for making a lot of balls on the break, but I have often moved 8-9 balls to the breaking end of the table. The risk is if you don’t make a ball, you could leave the 9 ball up near a corner pocket and the 1 ball usually ends up there as well.
Same.

Using a template rack, a buddy of mine showed me how he wins On the Snap pots. On a $1200 pot, I snapped in the 9-ball off a template using this same method. Unfortunately, I was the first breaker, and others had a chance to match me. Two others did. They all just copied what I did. Sort of. One of the other winners was my buddy who showed me in the first place. I tipped him.

This i know, Again thank you for what you do... Doc let me ask a question about breaking, Take a nine ball rack and place the balls in the same location each time with the same equipment and same player, repeating over and over the break, what percentage can the balls be broak out too the same location ? Say 1 out of 10... Guy

Having the balls end in “exactly” the same places is impossible, practically speaking. But if the rack is tight and you use a soft break, it is easy to have the layout be very similar every time. It is obviously more difficult the more speed you use.

I remember a long match with Donny Mills many years ago where he had the same shot at the 1 and and easy layout with no issues after every soft break. Corey has also done similar things in the past.

How much force used in the break and size of pockets, could about destroy pocket pool someday... Sad, And Doc when I say same location I mean area, not pin point, I've been chasing a pool table for over seventy five years, Still conscious... Guy
