How To Put Cloth on a Table

I recently got a used Gold Crown III. I traveled and got the table myself. I was able to take it apart and transport it myself.

Right now, I have it in a temporary place and have decided to set it up myself. Later this year, I am planning to get some Simonis 760 and having it installed professionally (if needed). Basically I am going to try it with the used cloth that came with the table and if all goes well, I may feel confident enough to install the Simonis myself.

I am just looking from some good advice, directions for putting the cloth on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ty.... i would call rocco spanelli at the golden cue in albany ny. he would be happy to answer any questions you might have. he has been recovering his own gold crowns for about 25 years and knows all the secrets i would believe. Note: The only book which covers coin-op tables, and at that very little, is "Pool Table Sales and Service".
 
I just wanted to let you know that Proficient Billiards sells enough Simonis 860 (or 760 if you want really fast stuff) for a 9' table for $179. That's a good deal at the retail level.

The other thing is, unlike one of the web sites shown, a lot of pros use an upolstery stretching tool to stretch the fabric. It has to be tight to play properly and to avoid damage to the fabric from cue tips.

Good for you, you have a table that very few have - one that someday I would like to own. Just like an Italian suit that you could spend $3000 on, a bad fit will make you look like you bought it at Home Depot :eek: . The Simonas is cheap, relative to the investment in the table. Buy the new stuff and have it put on by the best pool mechanic you can find in your area. Of coarse, do the rails as well. The $100 or $150 you put out for his service will show, big time. He'll make sure the rails are square, slates alined and the table is true. It'll look brand new.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I haven't decided what method to use. It seems like everyone has their own way of doing things.

I would like to get a few opinions on the topic. Does everyone else think that I should leave this to a professional? Or is it okay to try it with old cloth to see if it's doable?

Well, suppose you crack the slate? Then what? But if a reputable dealer/mechanic breaks something, s/he has insurance.

Also, consider your back....save it for bending over the table to shoot.

And, I've done an amateur job on cloth before and it looked just like an amateur job. (Not that you would, but it's something to consider.)

The money will soon be forgotten but you will be using this spectacular table for a long time and will constantly see any imperfections caused by faulty installation.

I would read up on the subject *and* have a pro set up the table and install the cloth the first time and watch.

I agree with most...I too would pay the money and have it done without any problems, quickly and by someone with experience. After all, this is the table you're going to be playing on, so you want it to be as perfect as possible. Let me know if you would like some Simonis, cut you a good price!

Hello Ty,

while I was the equipment guy for the men's pro tour for several years, i developed this system for stretching cloth.

First snap two white chalk lines close to the center line[long ways] down the cloth two inches apart. Make sure your two line are the same distance apart for the full length of the cloth. Next snap 3 line cross ways, one in the middle [side pockets] and one about 8" from each end.
Now go to one end and staple the cloth [starting at center lines [the two chalk lines] staple about 4" each way. Go to the other end and do about 6" each way. Doing this pay attention to the cross ways chalk line on the ends and middle, mainaining the lines as straight as possible, untill you work a few inches on the ends completely to the outside. Then repeat the same thing when stretching the cloth side-ways. One side pocket, then the next. After your done, the lines should be fairly straight. Vacum up the lines.

By using this method, the cloth will be stretched as woven [ straight] and it will be stretched the same everyware, and have no slow spots or HOT spots because of not stretching or understretching.Then the balls will track [roll] as meant to be,[STRAIGHT].

Most guys staple one end and then go stretch the other end. Never get a good stretch this way. The first end dosen't stretch as well being pull all at once, over the lenght of the cloth.
