Pretty sure the Crayon trick originated with McDermott, who used a green Crayon after engraving their logo with a small pantograph - probably where Bob Runde learned it. As I recall, after the new plant was built the pantograph station was located in the shipping department and the butt plates were engraved and colored in only after the cue had passed final inspection, immediately prior to shipping.
