How to remove excess shellac from new shaft..

Outside of taking to a professional, what is the best and easiest way to remove excess gloss/ finish from a shaft? Chemical? Sandpaper? Steel wool?..
Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

if its a cheap shaft, 800 then 1500 then 2000 sandpaper, then a very thin coat of wax and burnish with soft piece of leather.
expensive shaft, do your self a favour, let a builder spin it on his lathe
