How to remove sticky residue off of cue handle (that is missing wrap)?

Can someone here recommend a safe method for removing sticky residue off of cue handle (that is missing wrap)?

I would really like to shoot with the cue (because it is the only cue I have), but there is this sticky residue all over the wrapless handle.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Go to your neighborhood Ace Hardware store and buy a pack of single-edged razor blades. Hold the butt with one hand and scrape back and forth with the other, holding the blade in a verticle position.
It may take a little while, but you can do it. If it were turning on a lathe you could do the job in a couple of minutes. :smile:
 
I wouldn't use any liquid. When I recovered my cue I removed the linen wrap and carefully sanded the old glue off the cue. Doesn't take much to it so go softly.
 
What kind of wrap did it have, leather?
Cause it shouldn't be sticky if it was linen. Elmers white multi purpose is usually used for linen. It wouldn't be tacky if you removed the linen.

Contact cement for leather.
 
I am not sure, but I imagine that it probably had a linen wrap on it (most Helmstetters do). What is Elmers and multi purpose? Thanks all for the other replies.

The easiest thing to do until you get another wrap put on is get a roll of electricians tape and re wrap the handle. Put a couple of layers on and build it up. Just over lap it like you were tapping a hockey stick.

It will actually look ok until you take it in for a wrap. You can buy a couple of rolls for less than a bottle of Goo Gone and you won't have to clean a big sticky mess after.
 
That is a great idea (wrapping it with electric tape for the time being). I feel so silly for not thinking of that idea. Thanks.
