How to remove Wrap residue

I think I have a really old Bob Meucci cue. I would like to take pictures of the wood under the wrap to see what kind of splice. I took the dark grey wrap off but there is a black/grey residue all over the wood and can't see anything. What chemical compound or grinding to get all that stuff off?
