how to select a tip?

hello all.
i play a lot but i'm not very knowledgeable about cues.
i used to have a basic cue which i've upgraded with a renown local manufacturer's cue

both shafts had basic tips of unknown origin

after a few months of play, without much performance evolution i must admit,i was begining to feel down, then one day my tip chipped, and the local pool owner offered me to change the damaged tip with a moori(spelling?),and since i had that fitted,my game's improving at an incredible pace.

now here's my question:
how do you know if you're a better player on soft, medium or hard tip?

some will suggest trying different cues and find out,but the difference of the cue alone will influence my play,so i won't be able to "feel" if it's just about the tip.

any advices?

now, another point, it's about the shaft itself, can most butts accomodate the popular shafts like predator ect....

i don't like to be ubiquitous,so i'd like to find a great brand of shaft that i would be sure not to see on another player's cue, many thanks:)

Tips and Shafts

Yes predator, OB-1, the Universal, I-shafts, tiger x-shafts can all be fitted to most cues.

However if you want a shaft no one else has, then you have to call a custom cue maker, and they will make a shaft for your cue exactly like you want it.

Now to the tips. You need to ask that guy if he put a hard, medium, or soft Moori on your shaft. If you like the way it plays then by all means stick to that type of tip.

If you want to see if you play better with a hard tip or soft tip, then have him put a few different tips on your shafts and find out what you like better. That is how I figured out that I like the sniper tips the best. They hold their shape a lot better than most tips, and they are a hard tip, which I shoot really well with.

That's my two cents!:p

i myself am now very knowledgeable about the game, and indeed i understand the differnet types of tips. i just fitted myself a new tip on my cuetec for the first time and did a decent job, i'm very pleased.

point is i just ordered a medium hard lepro cus that's what was on before, and i really dont know which type of tip i'd prefer either. and i cant be arsed to buy a few different types and fit em and try lol.

thanks, but as far as i can tell,a tip usally last many months if not years,in which case it's pretty easy to play 2 years with the wrong tip ,thus getting bad habits....

bottom line is it depends on the game you play most. if you play straight pool the most, then a hard tip such as triumph will work wonders,it's intended,to play center ball not to move the cue ball very far at all, stop shots and very soft follow shots,if 8-ball is the game of choice i recommend a traingle tip, this will move your cue ball around a little more than than the triumph, and if 9-ball is your game, then play with a moori soft, for this will really move the white ball around the table. the more you want to move the cue ball around, the softer the tip.

Try getting 3 house cues and put a hard ,medium and soft tip on them Play with each one for awhile to see what feels best try to have the pool room owner do this for his customers.I did it and it does help.

how to select a tip

I'm really surprised that no one mentioned the Talisman tip! There seems to be a lot of hype about these double layered tips! can't wait to try them!
