How to tansport cue via airplane flight?

With the new security rules in effect regulating air travel, can anyone recommend the best way to transport your cues and how should they be packaged for transport assuming they will probably get pulled after x-ray for personalized inspection? I am attending the DCC in January flying into Louisville, KY. I plan to carry my empty case aboard the aircraft while transporting my cues in a rifle case with my checked luggage.
Any suggestions?

I don't believe they will even let you carry your empty case on board...I may be mistaken, but I know it's too large in size and they may argue it can be used as a weapon even empty.

What I do is pack my cues in the case like normal, and then put my case inside a Joe Porper travel case. Then I put that inside a long rolling duffel bag I have...with my clothes and a shaving bag packed around it for padding. Never had a single hitch with it done that way. Heck, wrap your case in a towel or two if you want before you stick it into the Porper travel bag, there is plenty of room.

I'm leaving my cues in the case and going to the UPS store to get the whole case wrapped and packed into a box to go along with my luggage. If I have time thisk week, which I doubt, I'm going to look for a duffle/suitcase that my case will fit in. If I find it, it'll go in my suitcase & not in a seperate box. I would ratehr it go in my luggage because I'm afraid that a box the size of a cue case could slide down in between something and get lost. This is the first time that I've flown with a cue since they changed the rules... I'm not very comfortable with this. :(

I just returned from a trip to Pa., and I packed my case (It's George case 2x4) in my big rolling suitcase. I put it sideways corner to corner, then packed all our clothes around it for padding. It went off without a hitch even though they cut our TSA locks off, and some Gorilla must have body slammed my bag leaving a huge dent in the side, but thats another story alltogether. What pissed me off is I saw more than 1 person getting on the plane with guitar cases!? WTF!....good luck...Gerry

i would not use anything that resembled a rifle case....do not use the word rifle .........have you checked the cases that Zero Haliburton builds for pool cues ??????

ship

For junior nationals in arizona iam just going to ship to the hotel or to my relatives house so it doesnt get lost.

These flying threads with your cues keep getting really ridiculous and over exaggerated. Personally I have been flying with my cue in its leather case for too many years to count. Whether I could carry it on board in the old days or have to check it now I have never had a problem. It is less likely to get lost, stolen, damaged or broken into than any luggage. It is easy for baggage handlers to handle and they love it cause it is not heavy. I have had luggage lost on the same plane as my cue. My cue arrived but not the suitcase. I know everyone does not have a leather case but if you do it is stronger than any suitcase and your cue will never get damaged. Just check it in.
And as far as carrying an empty cue case on board, that is no problem Shorty, think about it, its been through x-ray so its cleared right there. No different than a womans large purse.
I am sorry but it is not worth the extra expense. Sh"" happens in every form of shipping.

You are Correct about a Cue Case being to Large to Carry On Board an Airplane. Other info sounds like it would work well if you fly. Personally I never fly anywhere. I drive, bicycle, or walk....

No they aren't

Unless you carry your cues in a golf bag they are not too large to carry on a plane. Period.

A better way to pack a cue

I have a 2 x 5 hard case and when I went to vegas in '04 for the T.A.P. playoffs I simply sent my case along with my luggage ,Most cases nowadays have plastic PVC tubes in them to hold the cues anyways and if it is a hard case to boot it means even MORE protection

Now, if you have a soft case I would suggest that you take your cues and go to a place like Lowe's or Home Depot and buy some PVC Plastic Tubing that is just big enough to hold your cues and ask them to cut it to fit the lengths of your cues ..then all you have to do is tape the ends shut, put them in your suitcase and boogy to the airport !!

i have flown 3 times with cues and each time i have used a hard plastic 2 gun rifle case from walmart it was like 20.00 my 2x4 is kind of slim so it will fit with the "egg carton" looking padding worked like a charm, I let a friend use it and her case was a little more bulky so she took the padding out and still no problems i would suggest buying a new case and not useing a case that you have transported firearms in because if they find gun powder resedue they will pull everything out and inspect it (save some hassle and spend 20). what i dont understand is that i have seen guitars, walking canes and grandmas kniting needles on airplanes as carryon and they say a 2 piece pool cue is a weapon and has to be checked:rolleyes: oh yea it is nice to also invest in 2 locks to lock the case after inspection. just my .02

WARNING>>>>

if you box up your cues, either on your own or at the ups store, most airlines will not let you insure them.....i spent two hours on the phone with southwest last year before going to bca nat'ls in vegas....and learned the hard way that it was a waste of time and money....and had to hope that nothing happened to my 12k in cues, man that was a long flight.....i bought a haliburton case, btw.

get a dishaw/haliburton travel case or use a porper travel bag.....its worth the investment. another suggestion is to use a hard golf case...you can get two to four cases in there depending on size..
