How Would You Play This? 9/7/07

Depending on exactly how they lay, and the equipment, this shot might work. Extreme inside with a bit of follow.

For the heck of it.

I would bank the seven with a little low right 4:30 ish and park the cue in between the 8/9.The logical choice was already taken and I like to be a little different unless there's cash on the game.

I would use 7:30ish and hit the 7 a little more full...

It is rather tough to actually calculate the angle coming off the the 7 by looking at a diagram, but, here is another thought.

Hitting the ball with low english, (not draw, but, low center in order to get the natural roll off the rails) and come around 4 rails as shown in the diagram here.

Your idea MIGHT work. This is actually where the decision lies. To do this or something else. You've illustrated the ideal path to the 8-ball but you're asking for a lot. If you miscalculate how the cue-ball will come off any of these rails, you're going to find yourself with a combination. Not the worst-case scenario but definitely not ideal.

Yeah baby. We call these "reverse off the second rail" shots. The only thing I would criticize here is how you're striking the cue-ball. You want to use right spin but not top. The top is going to make that cue-ball bend the wrong way. You want center-ball or a hair below center. It's going to smack into that first rail so fast, you won't have to worry about any draw actually doing anything. You'll get a very firm rebound and maintain most of the right spin you employed.

You might try this... with inside draw... but I think the table would need to be fast...

I'm sure you're right. It's been a long time since I've tried this shot, and I really only had decent success with it on 760 cloth. I'll have to try it at home (860) tonight. Great shot, btw.

Let me know how it goes.

I think you'll miss the shot trying to hold the cueball. In fact, if you make the shot, you may end up accidentally executing the 4-railer which will get you there.

Yeah, right...

I think the 4-railer goes too long, but I'd probably try it anyway on the theory that I'd either bump the 8 out and get a shot or get by it and get a shot.

The only realistic alternative I see is this:

I just went and hit this shot about 30 times. Most of the suggestions on here (including my own of low left) put me above the 8 or into it. The best option I found was to hit the cue ball half to one tip below center with a firm stroke. This put me between the 8 and 9 almost every time!

You must be catching the second rail right near the lower left corner pocket and going four rails. It's a good route to go. Did you try using bottom right and reversing off the second rail?

Also, any attempt at right hand english came up well short. I have an 8 foot table with slower cloth, but it did not appear that a faster cloth would havemade enough of a difference. You would really have to slam it. Seems like it would be easier in the above mentioned way.

Yeah, with bottom-right, the key is to get the cue-ball to have an immediate rebound. If I can get video of it over the weekend, I'll definitely try. It's a firm hit. On a scale of 1-6, it'd be about a 3-4.

I played right hand, but not bottom right. I will have to try that. Great thread Jude!!

Thanks!

Yeah, I know it seems a little counter-intuitive using a little draw but what happens is, it hits the rail AND THEN the draw turns into follow.
