How Would You Play This? 9/7/07

Here's a fun 9-ball scenario. I'm sure a bunch of you are going to answer this one rather quickly but figured there might be some interesting alternative ideas out there.

CueTable Help

Depending on the cloth and the equipment, low left with a very firm stroke and try to come around 4 rails between th 8 and 9. Also, if the 8 is frozen, you can try and get to about the opposite side pocket from the 7 and go rail first and spin the 8 in and try and get back on the 9. JMO.

Southpaw

Going off the angle you have here, I see myself going right toward the eight or maybe in that corner pocket (w/ 4 rail shot). Might try center right and just try to come two rails straight down between the 8 and 9?

My option

I would hit hard top right, bring the cue ball off the long rail back over to the other side.

I saw Buddy Hall handle this shot in a youtube video and luckily a similar version of this shot came up in one of my matches that I happened to hit perfectly, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. :D

As always there will be several versions that will work, so bring em on. I'm always interested in seeing the various versions of hitting a shot. Many have actually helped me in matches.

I agree with southpaw. I would play a firm low left english to come to the bottom side of the 8. I believe that top left would make it more difficult to get position on the 8, having to go above it, or leave it short and cut it in.

I thought about that shot as well but I don't think it's possible with the cue ball that close to the ball and the cushion. I think it will die off the rail with inside english.

There seems to be too much angle on the 7 to play right hand spin and get below the side pocket unless you shoot it very softly.

Me Too

I too thought it would die on the rail, but it worked. Jude's cb positioning looks awfully close to the shot I hit the other day. I don't know what it is about that shot but I just smile every time I hit it. :D

I can see how you can get shape that way but can you think of a way where you can get perfect?

table conditions would probably affect the way i would play it. if table is slow i probably play it the safe way and go around 3 rails and shoot the 8 in the corner going up and down for the 9 in the other corner.
a fast table i think hitting it hard with inside middle and reversing it off end rail to go straight down table might be doable although it probably is never good idea to go against the natural way the cueball wants to travel. good post and good shot to practice.:)

X Bank

Just about the only other non-mentioned version I can think of would be to cross bank it, which should give you natural shape.

Not the perfect angle for this, but I would hit just below center w/ right hand English. In theory this would send the cue to the short rail, the English would take and send the cue to the long rail and back down table. Hopefully ending up somewhere in between the 8 & 9.

Just as an alternative solution, I might bank this 1 rail with inside draw to get straight in on the eight. On a slower table, I don't think you could make it 4 rolls and it might end up a little too close to the eight for comfort even on a fast table.

Maybe it's just me, but this shot doesn't look like it lays very well for four-rail position. If we assume that the cb is going to hit the first cushion at about CB-A, then it looks to me like you need to hit somewhere below (left of) CB-B to really have a good chance of ending up between the 8 & 9. Anything above that looks like it's got an awfully good chance of hitting the 8. From the position of CB-A, it might be hard to hit below CB-B, right? Or am I just looking at this wrong?

You think I was going to make it easy for you? Trust me sir, this was by design!

I'd just softly tap in the 7 ball (letting it come off the rail a little), and then curse myself for not leaving a good shot on the 8. Then I'd contemplate banking the 8 back down to the far left corner, or skimming the cue off the 8 making the 9. In either scenario I'd miss 85%ish of the time, and leave my opponent with an easy out. Sorry for the honest look into my pool playing stupidity :)

It is rather tough to actually calculate the angle coming off the the 7 by looking at a diagram, but, here is another thought.

Hitting the ball with low english, (not draw, but, low center in order to get the natural roll off the rails) and come around 4 rails as shown in the diagram here.

Thoughts:confused:
