I think depending on the table and how the rails are, I'd go down table and back to get on the long side of the 8ball so you have more room for error on the 8ball.

This shot could be real trouble... If you can clip the long rail with the seven, I'm playing safe here. Send the 7 over toward the eight and cue ball up behind the nine.
Otherwise, I'm going for the masse described and letting it go wild. I play the cue around the table on shots like this routinely-but they return to the same side meaning the nine would probably hook me; I'd have to get some draw to open up the angle into the long rail without getting any left on it.

I think you have to shoot here and that safety play is not a good option.
Depending on the exact position, soft masse or Bottom right to straighten it out off the end rail is the way I would go. I like a little more inside than SJM's diagram shows because his cueball path looks to be going too close to the corner for my taste. I dont like drawing back into the nine bc it seems like you could mishit it and end up snookered or having a difficult cut shot on the eight. Five rails is really letting it fly but I guess it could be the right shot depending on the layout.
All that said, Id probably mishit it, scratch one rail in the corner or juice it with too much inside and come back straight at the eight/nine. One thing I know is that I have the ability to find a way to NOT get out from this layout.

Same principle as when Mike Massey shoots an object ball into the rail with inside and sends the ball around like a normal 3 rail shot would be played.
