You're safe and frozen and likely racking very soon but for argument's sake, what would you do to give yourself the best chance of winning?

Kick behind the nine off the top side rail with mucho left, hitting the 8, and leaving it frozen (or as close as possible without letting the cue ball get on the other side of the 8).

If I HAD to play offense, I might try a masse to pocket the 8. Possibly a one rail masse kick.
 
I might intentionally foul by trying to kick the 9ball in front of the 8ball less than a ball width apart......Jude are you bored today?
 
I guess if you're SJM, you can do the masse shot again... the 8's not nearly as big of a ball as the 1 was though...

Sorry, I tried to set it up so you didn't have that option. Let's say you didn't.
 
You sorted these by degree of difficulty, didn't you?

If there's room, I might be tempted to kick into the near long rail with left english, hoping to hit the 8 as full as possible, driving it uptable. With luck, the cue might end up "behind" the 9.

The other option would be to attempt to tie up the 8/9, but that would be a very risky shot.

The two-railer towards the opposite corner pocket looks like the most straightforward path to prevent ball in hand (or possibly sink the 8).

...Or you can just take the intentional foul and cozy the 9 right next to the 8 such that the 8 has no pocket and there is also no dead 8-9 combination.

Knowing how I shoot like over a ball and how accruately I kick, I would probably take the latter approach. :o
 
I had a shot very similar to this once. I was not frozen on the 9 and the 8 was not frozen to the rail. Somehow, I was able to masse to the side rail and pull a 180 back up to the 8. Unfortunately I kicked the 8 too far and left an easy out. Nonetheless, the shot was amazing.
 
If your playing close to the vest, tap the nine up to the eight to tie it up. You may need to throw the nine just a hair to accomplish this. If you go this way, you must protect against leaving a combo or carom.

If you're playing more aggressively, play the two rail kick, top rail, long rail, and arrive at the eight ball with fairly slow speed. That way, if you don't pokcet it, you have a chance to leave opponent safe.

This is a pretty easy 2 rail kick to hit the 8. That would be my choice. I'd hope to get a roll of some sort after hitting the 8...
 
The 2 rail kick is the best option IMO. Tying up the balls is another option but it requires a perfect delicate touch. If you are off by even 1/4 an inch you lose the game in most cases.

So you decide to try to tie up the 9-ball to the 8-ball...so you place your cue tip to the cue ball and slowly puuuush the 9-ball up against the 8...okay so the push is exaggerated to the point that the cue tip doesn't leave the cue ball until the 9 touches the 8...lol and it's not a dead combo or carom...so what??...is it ball in hand or forfeit or what??...i've seen this done...

What you describe is a foul. However, the opening post in the thread indicates that the cue is frozen to the nine, so you can shoot through and don't have to elevate to avoid the foul.

I agree with most that the tie-up is difficult to execute, and unless you love your speed control, it's probably the wrong choice except against a weak opponent.
