Eddie's solution:

FastEddie's solution would work very easily in this slightly-adjusted position:

Sharp-crisp speed but not TOO hard. Almost full hit on right side of yellow. High maximum right English.

Draw-ticky

The big-draw ticky works best with this position. Extreme draw. No english or slight reverse.

OK, what about this one?

According to Dick Jaspers, what is the proper way to play this shot? And I don't mean how do you score the point. In its entirety, what is the proper way to play this shot, including what English do you use, what speed, what is your desired position play, etc? First person to get it 100% correct gets a free USBA patch and bragging rights!

Cut the red ball toward the upper left corner with just enough speed for it to stop two or three diamonds from the left short rail and a diamond or so from the top long rail. Cueball at 1:30 or slightly less to the right short rail close to the corner, then top rail, and back to the same short rail to land soft and almost full on the yellow, sending it toward the first diamond from the bottom right corner on the long rail. Ideal next shot is a three rail natural off the right side of the yellow.

I think maybe I scared everyone. Everyone is afraid of being wrong. LOL.

Don't worry. If you had asked me a while ago I would have been wrong, too!

We're here to learn, not necessarily to be right all the time. If we were right all the time, then we should be averaging 2.000.

How about this? I won't tell anyone that they are wrong (and playing the shot in different ways does not necessarily mean that it's wrong. Sorry about that, Gongmyo). We are just trying to figure out how would Jaspers play it. If someone gets it right exactly, then I'll just let them know that they are the winner!

A short reverse! Use a medium stroke, moderate speed, more of a snap or a limited follow through using right hand english off right of red approx, 1/8th ball to short near corner then long and reverse back to short then to yellow point ball. A good position is acheived when the red rolls slowly to the upper left corner. The white cueball and yellow stay close to one another allowing many options to point red ball for your next shot. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it! Oh yea!, Jim stop scaring us so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll try again. Sooting behind the yellow, short rail first close to the corner, then bottom long rail and into the yellow, then short rail again and into the red. No sidespin on the cueball, but hit the cueball high so it will come off the yellow with a little draw effect. Medium soft speed will leave all three balls on the same side of the table, with the yellow above the red and cueball fairly close to the red.

shot

long rail, short rail hit red,and goes back to short rail short rail, kicks red up on long rail and kicks yellow into corner medium speed. might be called a 2 rail ticky behind red ball. 1 o'clock english

Here's a hint: don't think too fancy. Don't think that Jaspers will play it some crazy way. It's pretty simple and obvious. The key to the shot is the potential position and also the type of English used (and speed) to make the shot. Think simple. Simple is always best.

May I offer a suggestion? Start a new situation with a new post. That way one can refer back to a shot and the buffet of solutions for that shot instead of a prolonged multi-thread that offers too many situations and too many solutions.

But what may also be beneficial is a tutorial on how posters can diagram their shot situations and solutions. It is much easier to see a shot than to have one explained.

Now...Jim.... back to you telling everyone why their solutions are stupid.
