How would you resolve bet no bet issue?

Howdy AZBers, had a situation recently with whom i consider a good friend, he was playing for fun with another friend; of whom he had to leave, so i am available, so i played with him two games of one pocket, we did not say anything about a bet, he won 1st game, we did not mark it, or said anything, won the second game, at that moment, another friend walked by, asked, i told him we are playing sociable, my opponent heard me, and to my surprise said, no we are playing for the usual cheap $5.00, i told him i was not betting, and i was taking way aggressive shots, and opened up the table for you; We argued back and fourth and i really got pissed off; last time i played him was two month back, i won and i offer to pay his time, or even give him his money back!

Did he mean not to say anything, and wants me to play loose (i am two balls better than him, and at times he asks for a spot for high bet) so he gets two or three games before he says something?

What is in your opinion a good solution for such a thing, i easily could have paid his time and the $10.00

I certainly learned a lesson, no matter who the opponent is, always declare the bet before your shoot a ball.

I think the rule is that, if the bet wasn't specified up front, the winner gets to determine the amount. At least that's the rule your opponent seemed to be using.

I would've given him the $10 and then spotted him a few games in a race to 5 for $50. Give him a good spanking on the table and wait on him to pull out his money and then tell him to keep it and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

If you're that much better than him,the next game you win say "Oh by the way, that game was for a $100".

It was only for a couple of 5 dollar games so no big deal in the long run.

The point or principle of it, that I understand. If he was trying to be trycky and suck you into playing looser than normal just to jizz you out of a ten, then he isn't much of a Buddy.

Buds don't play games like that with each other.

I would be thinking is this guy really a friend!

This is what really upset me! I always had good friendship feeling to him and many pool regulars, we've known each other for many years, yet he had the audacity to pull something like this;

Thanks to all that replied, i have no intention of playing him again.

I think you should get someone else you know that can beat him to play him, and just when he is paying
your friend, walk up and have your friend pay you your cut right in front of him.
Thank you very much.

A good friend that you gamble and occasionally bet high with. That's not a friend. However, it is the mentality of a lot of people in the pool world who have problems defining a true "friend"

I had a similar situation with a railbird. I felt he was just trying to hustle me and I just called him out. I explained the situation to a few regulars and they seemed to agree that it was a hustle.

Just call b.s. when you see it happen. Or better yet, be clear before you start a game.

If you guys usually play for $5 a game then it is easy to see how the misunderstanding got started.

I hear you ! you have a point. In my 37 years journey i have seen many things, but this one came as a surprise, did not know it was one way friendship i guess :(

Good one!!

if you usually play for 5 a game then he would naturally think that this is the same. so you are partly to blame. so if you are two balls better just keep playing and you will get even soon or winner.

At the risk of sounding female, go to him discuss the situation. Tell him your relationship with him is important to you (ick...bad taste in the mouth). Tell him your feelings (ouch....that hurt). Tell him when he does things like this to you, (oh God...I think I im going to throw up) , it makes you wonder if he really cares (oh crap...my head hurts).

Whew.....ok....I need to go out and kill a small animal now. Then a trip to the titty bar to finish regaining my manhood! Good luck!

If you *always* play for $5 a game then I could understand his side of the story.
But I gather from your post sometimes you bet small, sometimes you bet high.
So, he has no right to assume you were playing for any amount at all.

Considering there was no clarification of any bet at the start of the game, there wasn't any bet. If he insisted on getting paid, I'd ask him if he's trying to make me break the promise I made to the judge, to not hurt people any more.

Unless you're playing on a regular basis he would have had to confirm the bet at the start of the session or there is no bet. If it's an "established game" no. I think I would have just laughed and offered to buy him a drink. Or beat him :-)
