I just wanted to share with the group my very small collection of Paul Huebler’s cue building work. I have been debating doing this as I was afraid it would make it even harder to find these cues available and affordable on the secondary market, but Chris Tate made me feel guilty for not sharing.
Everyone knows about Huebler Industries cue production and that you could get a good bang for your buck back in the day, but few know that Paul used to build a line of fully customizable ‘Custom Shop’ cues up until 1999 when his arthritis got too bad to build any more cues. All ‘Custom Shop’ cues came standard with ivory (or maybe buckhorn) ferrules and where engraved on the bottom of the buttcap.
Enjoy, they are described below from Left to Right:
1. Custom Hearts (built for Larry Hubbart)- built 1982- ivory joint and inlays and hoppe ring with the Huebler Cross inlays. This cue was refinished and rewrapped by Dennis Searing in the mid 90’s and also he built a new shaft for it – this cue PLAYS
2. Custom One of a Kind- built in August 1986 – this cue is unique in that the forearm is from an Ivory King Model (6 ivory points) and the buttsleeve is from the Ivory Queen model with custom one of a kind Ying Yang inlays. Ivory joint and a sealed linen wrap (like a Meucci, Bob worked for Paul in the early 70’s)
3. Custom Ivory King – built in May 1992 – this cue has 6 ivory points and some ivory inlays in the buttsleeve. Ordered with Huebler’s flatfaced steel joint. This is one of the best playing cues that I have ever played with.
4. Custom US OPEN – built in March 1995 - This model cue is one of Paul’s most intricate works and this one is a one is unique in that it has oval and diamonds in the sleeve instead of the Huebler Cross inlay. The points are Recutts !! way before recutts became all the rage. Ivory buttcap and buckhorn joint.
5. Custom Ivory Chess – Built in March 1997 – This model is one of Paul’s favorite designs. Ivory buttcap, inlays and joint – Beautiful!! The points are once again Recutts! This particular cue has never been chalked and still has the factory sticker on it.
6. Custom Blue Mammoth – Built in April 1998 – this was one of the most popular custom shop models Paul built. It has four points and mammoth ivory inlays in the butt and points. This one is rare in that it was custom ordered with an Ivory Joint.
I hope you all have enjoyed my small collection and appreciate Paul Huebler’s work just a bit more now.
