Humidity and cases

I have a porper 3x6 case. It's been raining non stop for the past 4 days. I do not leave my case or cues in the car for any length of time(hour tops) and store them in my house. Took my cue out yesterday for the first time since league Weds. night. My tip was swollen soft and wet. I then check my other cues and nothing seemed wrong with them. Brought everything home and took the one the had been wet out of the the case and left it open. I rechecked my case again and everything seemed fine. Today I pulled out one of my other cues and the tip was wet, along with the other ones. I could also feel moisture on the felt inside my case. Could my case be absorbing a lot of moisture from all of the humidity from all the rain we've had. Or should I accept that some dirt bag spilled :mad: a drink on my case and didn't tell me. Sory for the long post and the ranting, I'm really pissed right now.
 
Don't know about the dirtbag with a drink, but it has been proven that not all cases are alike in terms of protecting your cues from humidity.

I started using Whitten cases only after learning that Ernie of Ginacue did some testing with a hydrometer and determined the Whitten to be superior for keeping the moisture out.

I'm not acquainted with how he conducted his study or what other maker's cases were rejected, but I know he still uses Whitten today, including a case with every Ginacue. If it is good enough for Ernie, It is good enough for me.

Lastly, I bought about 12 cues from a Florida collector who kept them in a Porper style 12X24 case. All were warped to various degrees. I can't say this was caused by the case, but it does make me worry.
 
IF your case was "doctored", the sponge like lining in a porper would be tough to dry out. Maybe hang it over a furnace vent for a few days opened? Ditto the cue...see if you can hang it in a dry envrionment for a few days.

Anything possible, but I don't see humidity in the air doing this...

works best for me ...

hong kong tends to get up to 99% in the summer ...

i have now pretty much switched most of my cues into thomas cases which seal tight and do the job ...

i also leave a dehumidifier on ( set to 50% ) all day long ...

if my cases have zippers, i leave them in the pool hall where the air-con is on all the time ...

and i never use them for point to point transportation on days that the air is moist ...

better safe than sorry :embarrassed2:
 
Puzzles me as well. Never had the problem, and I live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, where it rains a LOT!

Good lord what kind of enviroment do you live in ? Moisture should NEVER be felt in a case.....
 
Could the floorboard have a hole in it or do you put them in the trunk to take them back and forth to the poolhall (trunks are notorious for leaking)

That's just it, I have no idea what happened. My case wasn't far away from me the last time I had it out of the house. So either someone spilled a drink or something on my case, or it's absorbing the moisture. I pretty much figured someone spilled a drink. I just didn't want to believe that someone wouldn't have said something if that was the case. Sometimes people are very disappointing. :frown:

I had it in the back of the car and I did check the bottom of my case and my GF's case when I noticed the wet tip. Both were dry on the bottom and Weds. night it wasn't raining.
Guess I just needed to rant and confirm that my case wasn't the culprit which would have been a surprise.
 
The felt inside of many cases will absorb moisture like a sponge. You want to own a case where the liner allows the moisture to evaporate rather than holding it like a soggy paper towel.

I don't want to write another essay about it. All of the cases I make address this problem.

If you want close to airtight then the GTF case is the best in the Fellini style of case. Unlike the other cases in this genre it has a foam rubber barrier to provide a better seal when the case is closed.

Actually your case could be part of the problem. In an experiment I once put felt and another fabric over two glasses of water and left them both in the sunlight for several hours.

After several hours the felt was slightly damp and noticeably heavier than the test piece which wasn't placed over the water. The other piece of fabric which did not retain moisture was dry and weighed the same as the control piece.

I used to live in Florida and pull wet cues out of my case all the time. I also used to leave my cues in the car all the time.
