About 6-7 years ago I bought a Porta Cable at Lowes. There called jam or touch up guns. I bought it because it was fairly cheap, like $80 (there are alot cheaper ones out there) Intented on replacing it with a better gun, but I've had no reason to. The only thing I've replaced is the cheap plastic cup that came on it with a metal cup I got off e-bay for like $15. Oh, and I put a regulator on it so I can leave the compressor set high and adjust the presure at the gun. I think it sprays great and would recommend it anyone.

Guns

I recently got a setup from DeVilbiss(not sure of the spelling) but it was a 2 gun kit with a touch up gun and a regular gun for 110. All the parts are metal which was and important concern b/c my last gun had a plastic nozzle that got ruined from some chemicals. The kit was a startline and come with everything you will need.

I prefer the conventional gun not HVLP I never got HVLP to lay the paint right. I have a 20 $ touch up gun I have been using for the last 6 years. Cut the air back to about 30 psi instead of the rec. 55 and go to town. I think the gun was made by ati or mti don't know if there is even a name on it. I figured for 20$ if something happened to it I would just buy another but it as been great.

I have found that it is not as much the gun , but the nozzle size of it. I have a gravity fed hvlp with an inline reducer and the tip size is .8
The smaller the tip size , the better atomization you will get when you apply finish. It will flow much more even and really save you a ton a headaches. Thru the years I bought several guns ranging alot in price. I finally called an autobody guy I trusted and he shared the info with me on tip size. For cues in my opinion , a .8 to 1.0 is the best. Sprays awesome , no problems.
I think I have like $30.00 in my gun, bought it online.Reducer for the inline was $40.00 to adjust the flow at the base of the gun. I am very happy with my results.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Let me check, just moved shops to my home. I will run out there and check for a name or receipt real quick.

I use the small one in this two gun set. I had been using the big one on some furniture I had built a few years ago. Had the small one lying around unused. I just looked it up and it has a .8mm tip as somebody else recommended. Seems to work pretty good for me and they aren't expensive at all.

anyone ever try the airbrush guns?it seems like they would be better suited to do pool cues?

I thought the same thing, but they don't output enough finish to cover a revloving cue IMO. I have used it to spray a stain on a cue, and it seemed great for that.

the reason i ask,is i just saw one with a .05mm nozzle and i figured that particular model would big enough.i saw that Lee is using a .04mm nozzle.one more question Dave, why does everyone seem to like the small jet set ups?

Actually, if you click on the link in Lee's post, it has a .4mm not a .04mm. I believe Lee did a typo.
I'm not sure I know what you mean by small jet set ups?
Dave

most car or cabinet painters use 1.3mm or 1.4mm for clear.it seems like evryone here is using .4mm to .8mm.i was wondering why everyone uses smaller jets than standard.it seems like the RP guins would be better than the HVLP guns also.

I have a cheaper import HVLP I'm gonna try out before I buy a good one. The brand name is Detro. It has a 1.0mm tip in the gun, and comes with an extra 1.8mm set. It's looks made well for the price, but like it may be a fun one to clean, and has a plastic cup, so even if it works it probably won't last long:D

I've got at least 6 of the small gravity feed jam guns and the ones that had metal cups I changed to plastic. I ended up ruining the cap on one from continuously tightening it to tight but other than that they are all still good. Since you mix so little of finish at a time I like to be able to see how much is left in the gun before starting to shoot another cue.

Yeah, I see the andvantage in being able to see the cup level before spraying. Does the gravity fed spit air when it dries up too?

This one Isn't gravity fed unfortunatly, It is HVLP, but It's the style that can also be used with pressure pots or remote pumps so it feeds from the bottom, and the trigger is on top of the gun. I think It builds pressure in the cup too, so no telling what problems I may run into. I saw a gravity fed that said it works well with small compressors, and it was cheap enough to gamble on, so if this one doesn't work out well, I may try that, and/or just break down and spend a bill or so on a good one. I just ordered a regulator to go at the gun, and a water/oil sperator to go inline, but want get a better one setup at the compressor too. Maybe that's overkill, I don't know, but I don't want any water issues, just clean dry air.:)
