Hi guys

I'm from Australia and play the english style of 8ball and also some snooker

I am quite a good player, i play in our top league but i'm not amongst the top say 20 players in the State.

I have never used any systems (aiming, banking etc) at all. I just do everything by feel

Probably the only shot where i do anything other than get down on the shot and see if it feels right are large angle blind pocket shots. For those i just take a look at the line between the back of the object ball and the pocket.

Am i missing out by not using any systems?

Would trying to adopt any systems now mess up my game ?

Using aiming and banking systems simply adds to the information you have available when determining how you are going to shoot a shot. It isn't going to take anything away from your game, and can serve to verify that what you think is correct actually is.

The more knowledge you have, the more confident you become with your decision making. Confidence is rarely a bad thing.

We teach several different systems to our students. We always tell them they can use any or all or none of the systems, depending on what they like or don't like.

Personally, I use several different systems, and am always looking to see if any new systems might be of value. The more you know, the better you will play.

anybody use the "Right About There" system?

by that i mean, you line up the shot, sight it up, think to yourself, "Yeah, right about there" and shoot.

Playing by feel is called the ROTE system......everyone even systemic players have to have some sort of ROTE in them.

Since all tables play, bank and such a little diff there has to be adjustments for it......and last I checked most systems esp those in banking don't give you ultra clear cut instructions when your at X position and the rails are playing this or that way today.....

for instance I got left with a 2 rail kick two nights ago from SR to LR trying to hit the 8 on the second dia......When I walked up into the shot I automatically was in close proximation for the needed alignment, I checked it with my system as to how or where abouts I should be lined up, then I used feel to judge the spin that I needed........

Hit the shot as a med/soft speed and pretty as a peach she comes around and give the 8 a little pat on the butt and cuts it in the hole....

really made me smile as I shot it super clean and with pocket speed and she dropped like butter......

and like my bud said....WTF is the camera when you needed it lol

I know a butt load of ways to bank the balls but my go to for some time has just been half ball hit and adjust the angle outcome with the speed of the shot......you b/c very accurate b/c your always aiming at the same exact place and its just a speed adjustment.

Systems like anything else with this game require practice. Tables all play differently, but adjustments can be made. Having a system is much more reliable that just making a guess or poke and hope. At least that has been my experience.

Systems give you a specific reference point. They do not guarantee success but when you have a reliable reference point systems allow you to calculate needed adjustments more quickly playing on different table conditions.

The brain

Systems might be the right way to go but, I look the ball in.
Meaning; the object ball becomes the shot, you have to see the shot when it is executing and the only way to do that is to be looking at nothing but the shot, ball to whole, this requires the most serious focus I have ever used, not just looking at the ball. I trust my stroke completely and when I miss a shot I just remind myself to level the cue and fire away. The brian can only do one thing at a time and executing a shot is the time to remember that.

The best cue I have ever put in my hands is the "Ted Harris" I now uses and nothing else
