I've just been out playing pool with some friends. Three of them never played pool before (one actually played an online game...), so there I go playing Mr. Instructor and teaching all of them the basics of the game. I had my hands full the whole time, getting them to memorize the rules first, helping them form a simple bridge, take a stance and perform some easy shots, and then watching and correcting them while they were playing the actual game. We didn't even make to the strategy part, as they sure had enough for one day. I realized I spent a considerable amount of energy on helping them as much as possible, and I feel I succeeded. They learned the rules and managed to shoot more or less straight, pocket some easy balls and preserve their focus to the end of the game. They all have potential so I hope we'll have a lesson #2.

Wait until at LEAST the third session before you introduce the "RAM" shot

I think P&P is really making progress... his threads make more and more sense. He might not be the best instructor for a beginner, but so what... he tries. Good for you P&P.

But please go and visit a biljar klub if you ever have time, and learn out of your habits of idiot pool.

I am not even going to post a picture of a giant boat this time, I'm going to wait for someone else to do the seremonials...

I did exactly that with my father once. The next he did a jump masse shot and sunk the 9 hanging in the corner.

He apparently hustled his way through college in the 60's...

Beginners who still have trouble holding the cue + ram shot = one dead instructor. I think I'll wait a little longer...

You're right I'm not the best kind of instructor, but what I'm trying to do is to get people to like the game and keep playing it. And when it comes to that I'm highly successful. I was a mentor or at least a helper to around a dozen people and most of them continued playing and went past the beginner stage. Today we enjoy spending our time together at the table, and I feel proud watching them play on their own. After all, I did help them cross the first few crucial steps.

Regarding me visiting a biljar klub, what was the point of calling me an idiot other than showing off you can use Google Translate?

I taught a girl that can't play pool AT ALL the corner five system the other day, just for laughs. I mean, she might make a hanger, but any kind of cut shot was usually not even close to the pocket. She watched me make a three rail kick on the adjacent table and was really intrigued. So I showed her the basics (without numbers, as taught by Grady). After a couple of minutes she was having the time of her life kicking balls in 3 rails and her friends were all really impressed too. It takes so little to get people hooked on this game, I hope it will be what got her started on the worlds greatest hobby. If not she still had a fun time.

You thought a complete beginner to successfully perform 3-rail kicks in a single day? How?

1st thing that came to mind when I seen the title of your thread :

Too Many Ram-shots

I was thinking the same thing !!! That's a super secret move!!!

And here's a ship...

I recommend forgeting about the rules until they've got a halfway decent stroke and fundamentals. When learning fundamentals the "game" is simply Pocket The Ball with a Stop Shot. Then they play Pocket the Ball with Follow.

It's just a little too early for "in 8-ball, if you scratch the CB your opponent gets Ball in Hand anywhere on the table, unless the scratch occured on the break in which case your opponent gets Ball in Hand behind the headstring."

Yeah no real reason to get too far into strategy. Good luck getting them to develop a proper stroke. Maybe the best thing would be to refer them to the vast amount of info that can be found on YouTube.

Well, that's a little problematic, as we played in a bar and nobody will waste coins on simple shooting with stop or follow. People came there to play so I did my best to teach them in-game. It's actually easier for me that way.

Just out of curiosity, were they interested in all this, or were you just preaching at them? Sometimes people are just being polite buy really don't want to be told a bunch of junk. They just want to have some fun playing.

No, I wasn't preaching. I tied them to chairs and tortured them until they had no other choice but to hit every shot by running up to the table ;)
