I give up-I just can't get there!

I can't seem to beat the big bad 10 ball ghost. Why? I can't figure it out.Logic dictates that if you can run out-you can run out .It should'nt matter if it's 6,7,9,10,11,or 12 ball .I always practice 6 ball, and the 6 ball ghost Is more of my comfort zone. So, by my own admission I may be subconciously or unintentionally losing focus towards the end of my run .I have beaten the 9 ball ghost before, but I am an 0fer when it comes to 10 ball .

I give up .I guess I should stick to 6 ball .

People dont realize how good of a player you have to be to beat the 9ball ghost consistently. Multiply that x 10 and theres the 10ball ghost....and so on. JMO.

Yep.

Seriously, there is a huge difference between the 6 ball ghost and the 9 ball ghost, let alone the 10 ball ghost.

The break is part of it, but I also think the more balls you shoot, the more you get slightly out of line. If you are playing the 6 ball ghost and get a little out of line each shot, you may be able to recover against the 6 ball ghost. However, compound getting out of line just a little bit more over 4 more balls and you have a completely different situation against the 10 ball ghost.

I know when I was playing a lot a year or so ago, I was money with the 6 ball ghost. However, I would not bet on myself on the 9 ball ghost. Although I could beat it now and then, I was definitily not the favorite.

I think you should give up the 6 ball ghost. It probably does more harm than good psychologically speaking.

You are absolutely right

And as long as I have been banging balls into the rails,I have only beaten the 9 ball ghost 3 times in my life, and two of those times was on a small track.I am not a player. Not even close .But you would think that anybody that could halfway hold a stick could beat the ghost(especially on loose equipment)

Guys like Corey and John just flat out rob the ghost .I watched Omar Kang(Tony Chohon's cousin) make the 12 ball ghost say uncle- on a triple shimmed diamond! a few years ago.

Just don't seem fair to bangers like me:)

I know plenty of solid players that can win from time to time playing the 9ball ghost in a race, but to beat it in an ahead set...thats a different level. And alot of "Players" will tell you that it is easier for them to beat the 12ball ghost than the 10 ball ghost....just because of the way the balls are racked. Meaning its harder to make a ball on the break in 10ball. I saw Keith Bennett make 7 balls on the break playing the 12ball ghost on a pretty tight table. The break is huge in all ghost games.

clean balls and the cue ball

Walt,

Your odds of beating the ghost go way up with clean pool balls and a full sized cue ball. When a cue ball stays in use too long it gets smaller and lighter than the object balls. I used my own cue ball the last time I played in Baton Rouge.

Actually, logic dictates that there is a vast difference between the 6-ball ghost and the 12-ball ghost.

This reminds me of Mike Sigel's comment after running 150-and-out on Mike Zuglan, when they asked him how many balls he could run if he kept going. He said, "Well, I ran 150 which means I can run at least 300." Mike ain't as good at reasoning as he is at running balls.

I wonder what the actual difference is between say the 6-7-8-9 ball ghost games.

On occassion I practice playing the ghost. I play races to 5 or until I get five ahead starting with the 6 ball ghost.
Its amazing how much better I play until I get to the 9ball ghost. I dont usually get there which doesnt surprise me that much. Im more of a guy that tries to make it hard on the opponet and doesnt put up to many "packs".
However my results drop tremendously when reaching that 9 ball level.

There was a time years ago that I played my best pool and I did beat the ghost then. I play 9 on break or on early combo doesnt count. It was only a brief time that I played that way. Work and then quitting pool dropped my game alot.
I think I am more knowledgeable now but run out less.
