From now on... anyone I play against MUST turn off their PHONE..

I play a sweet return safety on a guy.. and I have to wait for 15 minutes for him to quit TEXTING. before he even looks at the table.. and then says... Are you gonna shoot?... NEAR NUCLEAR meltdown... if you are not going to pay attention to the game don't ask ME to play... he asked me for the game....

never again...

I understand your peeve, however there are some circumstances where having a phone on is very necessary.

If you're someone who is unemployed and looking for work (I have a pool playing friend in exactly that situation right now) your phone is a lifeline, and while pool may be an avocation, taking the call of a prospective employer comes in first, in my opinion.

I know someone who was watching an exhibition by two pros, and right in the middle of it he got a phone call to tell him his mother had just had a heart attack, was in the hospital, and wasn't expected to last through the night.

There are those who are always yakking it up on the phone, that's totally different, of course.

While I understand you're peeved about phone use and pool, not everyone has the luxury of being able to turn the doggone thing off.

true.... but ... INFO overload.. is clogging to many peoples brains.. they have to know everything all the time... life is fast paced hectic.. things popping up all the time...

the new web phones put you online all the time in constant contact with everyone you know.... the reason I play pool is to GET AWAY from that..

there will be a backlash to this constant contact with everyone....

that might be the key to the resurgence of pool... shut off your phone and play a few racks... new BCA slogan??? LOL

Maybe someone in the poolroom saw you and him playing and decided that they weren't gonna let you rob him on the table.....so without walking over and stopping it they knocked your action through the new action knocking technology.....lol!!!

I agree, it's gotten way out of hand. Notice the number of auto accidents that occur while people are on cell phones. Also, near misses, we just missed being hit on the road a week or so ago by a woman talking while driving. I'm unemployed also, but do not give my cell phone number to perspective employers. They can leave a message on the answering machine, also, the home phone rings into my wife's cell phone so we can get calls while on the road, if necessary. Most any call you can get can wait, you don't have to be on call 24/7.
The ones that really get me are people in public places who have ring tones louder than their home phones and do not turn them down/off in public places, not even in libraries! Then they carry on a conversation in a louder than normal voice, like the people on the other end can't hear them unless they shout.

Some people just crave the attention.

My pet peeve is people who can't spell "pet peeve" correctly.

:D

I just love the jokers who hold the phone up to their ear with their shoulder, all the while chatting and lining up for shots. Pure gold! :)

hey man dont knock it I had a guy break and run out on me holding the phone with one hand and shooting with the other. The guy BROKE AND RAN OUT one handed in 9-ball on MY OWN TABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! needless to say I dont let him play one handed anymore lol.

I understand your frustration, however, you should go read the latest post on OMGWTFs blog. She deals with an unusually ignorant opponent by totally ignoring his antics.

turn it off

I have played pool many nights while on call as a service plumber.I keep my ringer turned off and simply check once in a while to see if anyone has called. If I need to make a call I can let my opponent know that I need a short break.Just a bit of common courtesy goes a long way.

Not just in the pool world peeps can be very rude with their personal communication devices.Maybe it is a sign of the times, people just don't think of others.

We live in different times now, better get used to it. BTW I agree that only important calls should be taken during a match.

I once watched Dave Martin (Jr.) answer his cell phone, break and run out while talking. This was during the BCA Canadian Championships. Of course he can play anyway he wants to, he's a great player.....SPF=randyg

I think during a tournament there should be a penalty for a player answering his phone uring a match. It can flat out shark his opponent. I don't let it bother me, I simply lay my cue down on the table and sit down until he is finished. I think that can shark him right back.

If you are gambling you should know the guy you are playing and his views on the subject. I have a guy that I will not play unless he turns his phone off and sits down between shots. I get tired of waiting for him to get off the phone or finding him when it is his turn. He can't stand it, so we don't play anymore. No $100 set is worth it if you are going to HATE playing.

Last week I told a guy who got a phone call while I was shooting. "Hey, I'm going outside, Let me know when your phone call is over". That way he had come come track me down after his rudeness.

NICE! I would rather play Laura than have to listen to someone on the phone.

Sorry but my phone stay on 7 x 24 x 365. But making you wait 15 minutes was B***S**T IMHO. Did you notify the TD? of said problem?

My pet peeve also

The other day during a ring game one of the 3 players was constantly on his phone, completely frustrating the other two players. I was out of the game and remarked that since they banned smoking they should ban cellphones to, one of the two (who is a smoker) said "I heard that".
