I just Lost $150. HELP

it's the same with card gambling. if you feel that it isn't your night, call it off immediately or risk losing a lot more. it got nothing to do with your skill but with your mental preparedness. something just doesn't tick.

obviously, you are not aware that you're stressed. you seemed to be focused but in reality you weren't. give it a night,go home and sleep early. dont forget to drink your milk and brush your teeth.

I had a near identical experience at your age except it was $300, I was 18 years old and it was 1990 (which means the dollar was actually worth something). Keep your grades up and your bets low. That is, IMO, the best advice.

Exactly, if I go down a few games or sets (not that I gamble all that much), I'll take a step back and evaluate why I'm losing. Is the other guy playing above his speed? Am I playing below my speed? Is he just getting the rolls right now? How much am I willing to lose to find out the answers to these questions?

If I'm not playing well and losing most of the games, it's unlikely that I'm going to suddenly turn it around and catch a gear and start playing my average to above average game. I'm just not that type of player.

Sounds like the original poster was playing poorly and knew it; since it was a new experience for him, he didn't recognize that he should have quite long before he did.

Don't worry about it man, just learn to recognize when it's just not going to happen for you that night and pack it in before you get down more cash then you are willing to lose. Set a hard and soft limit in your head before you start to play. The hard limit is not to be exceeded for any reason; the soft limit is not to be exceeded if you are really playing poorly.

For instance, if I know I'm outclassed but I'm still playing my average or above average game, I'm willing to go over the soft limit because I've found that in this kind of situation, I'm likely to learn something by continuing to play. If I'm playing someone I know I should be beating the pants off of and the rolls are just going his way, I'll go over the soft limit because I know I can probably get back to even or at least reduce the damage.

Couldn't agree more. I wouldn't gamble with my friends either unless its cheap in their mind or yours. I occasionally gamble with my friends but since I'm a poor college student too, I try to keep it at a minimum. Also, I find it difficult to play my best game against them. I'd rather play an unknown or someone I know I have to shoot well against.

I am a college student, I don't have much money, I am a decent pool player, when i say decent i mean better than all of the people i play with. But i was getting pretty good and i could see every shot perfect. every shot i made was going straight in the pocket no rails. and it has been that way for about 1-2 months. but tonight i was off and i couldn't make anything, and i mean i always play for money with my friends and win all of their money. but tonight i just couldn't hit anything, like it was terrible...i could make the easy shots but the shots that are a little more difficult that i normally make i couldn't make. is this normal...i mean why was i playing so bad tonight, i was doing nothing different than i normally do but nothing was going in...and what's worse is i always play on this table. so is this normal to have off nights every now and then...i mean it's really frustrating to be playing so good and then play like you don't play pool that much.

sell a kidney and then play the guy again for double the money. You'll get it back. What's the worst that could happen?

Don't confuse your peak performance with your average performance. I used to do this A LOT when I was yonger. I would look at my level of play on my best days when I was really on and just assumed/believed that was my normal level of play. Needless to say I totally overestimated my level and played some folks even I had no business playing. (17 yrs old in 1992 and lost hmm about 250 cash and a really nice watch argg!) Reasonably speaking, no one always plays at their best.

See Travis Trotter for info on some private lessons. After the lessons you will never ever lose another game in your lifetime.

Stop taking money from your friends and start taking shots at the better local players.

I'm not morally opposed to gambling with friends, but you'll never get anywhere taking lunch money from the same bangers all week.

The "i"s have it.

Your friends have probably been Hustling you.
You got trapped! ;)
You need to give up pool and pay more attention to school
Don't most college students know how to make sentences and capitalize the word i? :)

I've been around this game for 45 years and there is only one thing I KNOW for a fact you can count on. In every match, and every game played, exactly 50% of the players involved will lose. Guess you were in that half that night.

Please, everyone take note.. In his first thread, he made reference to assuming Travis Trotter was a pro... And he had not responded to his own thread.

Please don't feed the troll. Next, you'll have him asking why he can't get a custom cue inlaid with bald eagle skull, and a custom elephant skin wrap.
