Actually his real name is Steve McQuoon.

If I recall correctly, armed only with a false tin passport written in jam, he jumped the fence on a stolen motorbike and narrowly failed to escape to Switzerland. Sadly 187 of his fellow British escapees were rounded up and summarily shot, and the six who did manage to make good their escape received no lucrative offers from Hollywood whatsoever.

No you're probably right. I was getting confused by the fact that just like stealing the Enigma off a German submarine there were no Americans involved in the mass breakout at all. It was entirely a British affair. But I'm a great believer in tradition, so let's not let verifiable historical facts get in the way of the US version of events. Steve McQuoons achievements deserve our utmost respect. Not least stealing a motorbike and reaching the Swiss border well before the bloke who stole the aeroplane.
